Forums - Movies & TV - Should we ban older films for being too offensive? (The satire "The Last Temptation of Christ" - 1988)

Ban "The Last Temptation of Christ?"

Yes! 2 7.14%

No (if so, explain why... you bastard!) 26 92.86%

Total:28

I realize the film was controversial in its day, as with most of Scorsese's films, but I ignored it until just recently.

Upon viewing the film, what it subjected me to appalled me.

The film depicts the life and times of a carpenter by the name of "Jesus Christ" (WillIAM Dafoe) who rose to fame 2000 years ago. But many have pointed out the stunning resemblance to the Monty Python film: The Life of Brian. After watching this The Last Temptation of Christ the similarities are undeniable. "Jesus Christ" is clearly intended to be an offensive lampoon of Chapman's character Brian. But they don't even name the character correctly since the initials "J.C." are clear reference to actor John Cleese.

While Scorsese is on record saying that it is a film based on a novel about a carpenter and is not in any way based on the Monty Python film, I will have to call that statement a steaming pile of monkey shit! If I were in charge of Monty Python, I would sue Scorsese, Dafoe, and Universal Pictures without mercy on grounds of plagiarism and libel slander!

From a critical standpoint, I find this "The Last Temptation of Christ" to be not even half as funny as the Life of Brian! Parts of it are a colossal drag: like the crucifixion scene at the end (Again! A blatant RIPOFF of Life of Brian’s ending) which I am not sure is more silly or depressing. I barely laughed at all!

The original Life of Brian crucifixion scene was done with far more grace:

We don't ban, we never ban OBVIOUSLY!

Because 3 words: Freedom of Speech, or freedom of artistic expression, freedom of opinion etc.

Banning, censoring, forbidding are all signs of an ignorant society that can't stand dissident points of view. Banning/censoring is the root to dictatorship. It's the implicit admission of one's limitations and it's a way to prevent progress. A lot of progress has come to be because some people bravely stood out against the ideas and mores of their times. (And the stupidity of their peers)

NEVER ban the last temptation of Christ or The realm of the senses or the written works of the Marquis De Sade etc...

Banning/censoring someone else's opinions/ideas/artistic works is for weak minds and as history has it, too many weak minds hold way too much power in this world.

(Don't I know something about it )

First thing that came to mind reading the title was Laurence Olivier's Othello where he played the character in blackface for the whole film lol.

I realize this post is meant sarcastically but yeah, I mean, lets just not do that?

Its really interesting to watch old films IMO to get a perspective of the evolution and history of the art. Im a sucker for old classic films.
But wether its old classics or modern films, you can watch whatever you want and simply not watch a controversial film that touches a sensible vein to you. No one is forcing you. Lars Von Trier has been doing "controversial" films his entire career and its always annoying when they censor him in the USA like they did in Antichrist because, again, you can simply not watch the damn thing if you dont like it.

Just as you dont have to listen to music you hate, buy a modern painting you dont understand, watch a ballet that bores you, play Arms, etc, etc, etc

What if these "ideas/artistic work" are both wholly unoriginal and a blatantly offensive mockery? This "Jesus Christ" character is clearly only meant to disparage and sneer at Monty Python's Life of Brian. There is little originality or inherent value to the so-called "work of art!"

I'm about to get perma-banned for totally unrelated reasons to this thread so I'll just give you a last reply before I'm on my way.

Should you consider those ideas/artistic works bad, offensive, worthless etc, well that is your right and prerogative but that does not give you the right to erase those bad ideas/artistic works from existence simply cause they offend you. Don't watch them, criticize them and if you want, advise your friends not to see those, but erasing a work of art or idea that you don't agree with is wrong cause it implies that only your views are objectively worthy of existence and I don't think anyone's views should be IMPOSED on all. Choice is important, even vital. Everyone should be allowed to walk their own path even if it strays far away from what some would call the norm. At least in my opinion.

EDIT: In regards to my perma-ban, how ironic a coincidence that this thread be my last in which I debate considering the topic here, and this thread really is a coincidence in case any one wonders.

What if I think some work you deem offensive is very original and a work of art? And what if I'm offended by something you think is original and a work of art? Will that get banned, too? And who determines what constitutes something offensive or unoriginal?

Shouldn't you start with films such as Birth of Nation which was like a KKK promotional movie? I never understood why it got so much praise. Looks as bad as Citizen Kane but some people love that film for some reason. It nearly put me to sleep in film class I took in college awhile back.

I don't think we should be banning anything.  Just don't watch it if you don't like it.  I don't like super hero movies anymore except maybe Deadpool but I don't think they should be banned.  I just avoid them.

Heheh, I suppose you could get upset. Or you could always look on the bright side of life.

(I feel like I am the only one that sees that Jumpin is just kidding.)

Ban Blazing Saddles the one film Mel said he regrets.

I am kind of embarrassed on behalf of the forum =P

I think this is the last time I attempt to make a joke post.
