Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Getting more and more worried about Doom Eternal on Switch

I made a thread like this one on July. Very few people seemed to be worried then... but now the game is two months away and we still haven't seen a single gameplay video. Not just that, but a Bethesda employee appears in the latest Direct to announce a 20 year old port instead of any news about DOOM Eternal.

Yup, this smells bad...

I think it's still coming. I think the new wolfenstein that just came out was treated the same way. They want to show and talk about the best looking versions, xbox and ps4, and just release it on switch also. I think mortal kombat did the same thing also. I'm looking forward to the new doom also. So hopefully I'm right.

If it's just a delay, they should have told us, there's nothing wrong with reasonable delays.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

It would suck not having the day and date release, but I feel like a delay into that particular window would have no negative impact on sales.  It might even help the game of it reviews well on PS4/X1, as Jan and Feb there will be a lot less to compete with.

There is no way that releasing after Christmas and after release on other platforms helps sales.  It definitely will have a negative impact.

The reason everyone releases in the fall is to have hype around their game during the holiday shopping season.  A January or February release loses all of that.  Releasing after the other systems means many people that would have purchased on Switch will buy it elsewhere instead.

I have not decided what system I'll play it on.  But, if the reviews are good, and I'm not busy playing something else at the time, I'll almost certainly buy it in the release window.  If the Switch version isn't available at that time, that means I'll be playing on Xbone or PS4.  So, that's one potential Switch sale lost.  There are lots of other people in the same situation as me.

I run a shop, here in Italy, and I've just checked: all my italian distributors had only preorders open for PS4, XONE and PC, no Switch version on track. Very weird. From my experience as retailer, I can say that in this case the best scenario is that the game is delayed (much delayed, since that WRC 8 that comes on Switch 2 months late, is however in preorder) but no one here has a product page for the Switch version of Doom Eternal, sadly :(

At least Wolfenstein Younglbood on Switch was always available for preorder since day one. Also, they actually showed some form of gameplay footage before release:

Minute 3:24. That blurry mess is obviously the Switch version....

Meanwhile, on the same video, on minute 3:11... DOOM Eternal appears with a CGI video. Also, it has no specific release date (coming soon), while Wolfenstein Younglblood does (July 26, 2019).

There's clearly something going on with DOOM Eternal on Switch. And Bethesda is handling this situation very poorly. They could have adressed the issue on the last Direct, but they didn't. It would have been very easy to say: "Hey guys, Panic Button is working very hard to make DOOM Eternal the best way possible for the Switch. However, they need more time so the game will be delayed X months. I hope you understand. Meanwhile, we are releasing DOOM 64 for the first time since 1997. Have fun with it. Bye".

There may be something going on, sure. But it's far from a fact. I remember with mortal kombat, they never showed it, and it was coming soon. Alot of people were saying the same things as with doom eternal. I think this will be the same situation. They're not focusing on it publicly because it's not going to sell more than any of the other versions. PC, xbox, and ps4 is what they will talk about, show, etc... so until Bethesda says otherwise, it's coming when they said it was.

Mortal Kombat 11 was, just as Youngblood, available for preorder on Switch since it was announced. Also, while they were recluctant to show gameplay footage on Youtube, they brought the game to PAX and people atending the event were able to play the game and give their impressions. We had prove that the game actually existed.

Do we have any tangible prove that DOOM Eternal on Switch is real? I mean, besides Bethesda saying that it was coming to the Switch like... a year and a half ago? Because that's the only thing we have. They haven't said anything about it since then.

Personally, I wouldn't play it on Switch because I want 60 fps.

However, I think whenever and whatever the Switch gets will be fine. Also, I think the Switch version could have problems if they try to achieve launch parity. Its evident optimizing for Switch takes extra time.

Well... MK11 enjoyed launch parity and the result was one of the most impressive current gen ports to the Switch. In fact... it achieved 60fps while having an image quality very similar to DOOM.

We shouldn't forget that the Switch version of DOOM Eternal is being made by its own studio: Panic Button. Time and optimization shouldn't be a problem.

But if they actually need more time... they should just say it. And people would understand. Being quiet only makes people worry and especulate...
