Yu Suzuki says he could return to Virtua Fighter and Out Run

Forums - Gaming Discussion - Yu Suzuki says he could return to Virtua Fighter and Out Run

Suzuki is currently finishing development on Shenmue III, his first major release for more than a decade, with publisher Deep Silver, and has indicated he would like to revisit his other franchises too.

Suzuki is creating Shenmue III with his company YS Net, but remains a consultant with his former employer Sega.

The Japanese giant has shown an openness to outsourcing IP in the past, not just with Shenmue but also with Bayonetta to Platinum Games.

Asked if he would like to return to Virtua Fighter and Out Run, Suzuki told VGC: “Yes I would like to [return to those]. If you’re going to ask me what, I can’t answer that!”

Pushed on whether that means he might already be in discussions for the IP, he replied: “Yes, there might be something [happening]. But since the IP you mentioned are owned by Sega, I would need to work with them. I am a special consultant with Sega, but we will need to talk.”

I think many classic Sega games could come back in the hands of small studios and indie developers. Whether it be 2D graphics or AAA-ish graphics, the gameplay should be akin to games of the 80s and 90s.

As for Virtua Fighter, they should also go the F2P route. Design the engine to work on all platforms with crossplay.

I have mad respect for work and technical prowess that Yu Suzuki has demonstrated throughout his career, but lets wait untill Shenmue 3 comes out.

I'm confident Shenmue 3 could easily be at par with previous games. But that's reflective of how mediocre Shenmue 1 and 2 are as games.

Im more talking about the last big game Suzuki helmed being Virtua Fighter 4... waaay back in 2000; almost 20 years ago. Does he have what it takes to make modern games?

Oh, Shenmue 3 is gonna be his biggest game ever. The new trailer was actually much more impressive than I expected.

I'm very confident he could handle a new Virtua Fighter. The gameplay of VF5 still holds up really well as, simply building on that would be a good start. If anything the series just needs more personality like Tekken. The gameplay of Tekken has changed much but the story stuff, endings and other unlockables had me hooked on Tekken 7.

Cool. But... why not try something new, something fresh?

Hunting Season is done...

Well If Shenmue 3 gets really good there is always the possibility Sony decides to purchase YS Net and have him make some new arcadey game for PS5.

duduspace11 "Well, since we are estimating costs, Pokemon Red/Blue did cost Nintendo about $50m to make back in 1996"

Mr Puggsly: "Hehe, I said good profit. You said big profit. Frankly, not losing money is what I meant by good. Don't get hung up on semantics"

They don't need to buy Ys Net to get an arcade style game.
