Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony aquires "Insomniac Games"

This acquisition seems about right. They were basically a Sony studio before this anyway.

Seriously? Everyone was calling it.

but everyone has been calling it since the PS2 days.  Doesn't really count if you just keep being wrong until you're eventually right.  Kinda like how people say they "called" a FF7 remake announcement when they had been predicting it randomly since 2007

That doesn't mean people didn't foresee it coming. Maybe we should be generous and say there's a little nuance between "calling" something, and thinking it will happen. Either way, people did foresee it. It became especially clear when Insomniac made their first 10+ million game, which was a PS4 exclusive. Like, c'mon, it was obvious the moment Spider-Man was a smash success.

That's what I call an acquisition. .... congrats for both.... big news..... no one saw it coming

Seriously? Everyone was calling it.

Yes Seriously. ... previous attempts by Sony were denied by insomniac because the studio wanted to be an independent studio...

Yeah ... back when they were making decently big games on the PS2 and PS3. Now they're making huge ones tied to Sony.

About 20 years late... which does, though, tell how fitting this is. I'm a bit sad because this might mean Insomniac wasn't doing too fell financially so this might have been half-forced, but at the same time, Sony is definitely the right owner for Insomniac considering the history of the two. As someone whose main platform is PC, I'm somewhat disappointed, but like I said, this is quite fitting.

How? Spider-Man was a big success and obviously Sony is interested to contract them again for a sequel. Insomniac was in a perfect position as they could've just told Sony to look for someone else to develop Spider-Man 2 if they didn't pay the price they wanted them to pay.

Yeah, that was just speculation on my part. Sometimes devs get bought when they're doing poorly financially, but I don't know if that's the case here. Before Spider-Man, Insomniac didn't seem to be doing too well in a while, but Spider-Man seems to have been quite popular.

Well, it's as the person I was replying to said: why buy a company that would work with you anyway. There is also the fact that Sony's talk of acquisitions started soon after E3 when Microsoft bought another company (after purchasing 5 others) and pledged to buy more. I'd think what you are saying would make more sense if this was a purchase that was unexpected, something that would expand their portfolio, but it's one they've worked a lot with and haven't other had a reason to purchase. It looks more like a defensive more than aggressively building their portfolio.

That said, I'm no expect on Sony's acquisitions so if you have more specific examples of what you are talking about then I'm open to hearing them.

Because it was expected, it is unlikely to be anything related to Microsoft, but it is pointless to debate because no one will ever know.

Well, if you look above we have at least Daniel Ahmad saying what I'm saying. That said, I fail to see how it being expected would mean it's not because of Microsoft. It was expected because Microsoft has been buying up studios and Sony has said soon after they will do the same. Again, if Sony was bolstering their portfolio then they wouldn't buy Insomniac because they work with Sony regardless. Thus, the only reason to spend the capital to buy them was to defend against someone else buying them.

And debating these things is kind of the fun of message board discussions.
