Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony aquires "Insomniac Games"

ok first off to people saying why buy a studio that was already making Playstation Exclusives? i dont think that sony didnt knew that, IMO the reason sony bought them was the turn around development time, Insomniac has the highest number of exclusives in any playstation generation Ps3 had 3 resistance games 4 R&c in span of 7 years, not to mention there was fuse.

coming to this gen multiple VR titles song of deep, SSO, Ratchet & clank, spiderman..

also i hardly think it was reactionary move to MS, more logical would be to say sony bought insomniac so that google didnt buy them out for stadia

Yeah they're quite a big studio, usually working on 2-3 different projects at any given time. Now they can work on smaller budget VR games for Playstation as well as Spiderman/Ratchet. Dedicating all there staff to Playstation, rather than working on multiple platforms.

Pre-Spiderman this wouldn't have been that big a deal. But when a developer has just released a game that sold 13m copies, yeah this is a big catch.

Wow Insomniac games worth 5 studios Microsoft purchase recently

PS5 will be another winner and next will be Kojima production , believe it

Don't get me wrong, I think Insomniac is a great studio. However, they aren't better than Playground games, Ninja Theory and Obsidian combined.

It has been a very significant studio for PlayStation exclusives, this makes sense. But I'm not gonna pretend their games have been industry defining.

By Fact alone this studios are equal to Naughty Dog + Multi Platform developer + Triple A VR Developer.  Not include how they have a long history since PS1 era Even Naughty Dog is worth 5 studios compared to Xbox Games Studios.

That was long overdue.

Now please SONY, bring the Resistance games on the ps4 with Psvr and aim controller support.

🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Well that wasn't really needed to secure exclusivity. But well that may increase their financial availability to ensure all their future games have the highest possible caliber like Spider-Man (which I suspect was the breaking point for they to go all in).

Well it will secure Sony interest  by saving Insomniac  being purchased by another competitor such Microsoft, Google and facebook (Oculus VR games).

People are asking why now?, The answer is obvious: Spiderman is by far Insomniac biggest success but they have no part in owning the IP. If Marvel and Sony decided to continue the franchise with another developer Insomniac wouldn't be able to do anything. The profits form Spiderman success are way to big to say 'no' to an offer from Sony guaranteeing you that you will be the developer for the next Spiderman games. That guarantee you financial success and prestige. And besides all of this, there is the familiarity between them of course, so Insomniac knows that if they want to do something new, Sony will back them up, like they do with the rest of 1st party devs.

Sony owns their biggest franchises, and now they can make games from those franchises and make new ones if they want, only just this time, under Sony powerful sponsorship and marketing. It's a win-win scenario and it shouldn't surprise anyone....

Edit: Oh, and by the way, 13'2M units SOLD to consumers in less than a year for Spider-Man...., just simply amazing. The game keeps selling and it's going to be one of the best selling exclusives for any platform in the end. More than 20M with a PS5 version in the future seems like a safe bet.

And although Insomniac was developing for them for so long, and had success, no game was a blockbuster so that may be the reason why just now they purchased, they saw the studio can do a game that sells massively.

They also could have bought QD but besides the games being great for me they don't sell more than 5M so Sony probably preferred to just hire the studio instead of buying.

I wonder if Insomniac was in MS´s crosshairs and Sony got wind of it and quickly closed the deal.
