Players’ Choice: FFXIV Shadowbringers Voted July’s Best New Game

Blog post: https://blog.us.playstation.com/2019/08/01/players-choice-vote-for-the-best-new-game-of-july-2019/

"Darkness prevails in the Players’ Choice poll for July 2019. Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers has been voted as last month’s best new game by PS Blog readers, followed closely by Dragon Quest Builders 2 (congrats twice, Square Enix!) and Wolfenstein: Youngblood.

If you’ve ever been on the fence about checking out FFXIV, I can personally attest to its quality — but bear in mind that it’s an MMO, so it’s a commitment! There’s a free trial available, which will let you dive in to the base game and play up to level 30. That won’t get you into Shadowbringers, but it’ll give you a taste of the broader experience and help you decide whether it’s something you want to stick with."

Remember when people say MMOs is a fad and a dying genre? Well here we have Final Fantasy XIV, an MMORPG with a blog entry on the US PlayStation blog website stacking up against single player games and taking names. Yeah sure there have been other MMO ports from other Asian countries but none of them have made an impact like Final Fantasy XIV has.

Well deserved, it is a fantastic addon!

I don't know if MMOs aren't truly slowing down, but FFXIV has certainly made an incredible turnaround, from the trash that was in 2010, to arguably become SE's best release in the last 20 years.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

I've never been able to get into any MMO, but FF14 is something else. Really beautiful world and tons of things to do without being overwhelming.

They aren't on the verge of being wiped out, but we only have a few popular ones today, unlike years ago, when we had plenty to go around.

Going by ESO's slated update for 2020, and their current expansion playing out with time, it seems they are trying to make a turnaround as well. WoW on the other hand is still in a muddy situation, and will likely have to use their next expansion as a means to turn things around on their end.

That being said, the only MMO I'm set to play for the rest of this year, will be WoW Classic, since I've been waiting for this for over a year now.

I have been keeping my eye on FFXIV and I'm happy it is doing well. If there was ever an MMO I would get into, it would be that one. However, in order to get a decent amount of value out of it I would have to play it quite a lot and forgo many other games.

Lube Me Up

I would've played this religiously for years if it wasn't an MMO.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

I haven't gotten to Shadowbringers yet but picked FFXIV up again after a multiple year break. As far as MMO's go this game is amazing. It is stylish and beautiful and there is so much interesting content, I feel like I am overloaded.

The best part however is how the story is told. It's the best and most interesting story-driven game I have played over the years, (single player included) where you patiently watch a plot build up before taking the reigns at times. And I am only finishing up on the second expansion, Heavensward.
The biggest downside at this moment is that I lose myself in crafting, I have leveled all crafting and gathering jobs even passed my main job and it keeps me away from the awesome story far too much.

Anyway, SquareEnix is redeeming themselves in a way I never would have thought possible. Forget about the lackluster 13 saga, all the remasters and moneygrabs, THIS is where you should spend your time with Final Fantasy!

I dont play it anymore.... but imo, its the ONLY worthwhile mmo out there.

Maybe Im biased though, I love everything Final Fantasy... and considered FF11 to the best MMO before 14 too.
I like that its PVE focused, and that it sticks with the Tri-fecta of Tank-Healing-DPS, and teaches you to fit into roles.

Theres nothing wrong with a group focused pve game, where you work together with others to reach goals.
Its challengeing and fun, and as simple as "pick one outta 3 roles" might sound, theres plenty of choice and sub-roles, dual purpose ones.

PLD, WAR, SUM, SCH, BRD, DRG, MNK, NIN, BLM, WHM, RDM, DNC, AST, DRK, GUN, MAC, SAM....

Tons of jobs + subjobs combos, and nothing really plays 100% the same, so theres plenty of choice in finding that 1 thing that suits you best.
(ontop of the crafting, gathering.. ect)

The player economy is centered around player made stuff (though you can get by, with just rewards from quests while leveling).
playing the auction house (buying cheap, selling at more, when things dip ect) or just mass producing items in demand (if your a crafter), and live off of gathering mats, plenty of ways to get by in game.

I would see that, I mean, you are more a fan of Japanese offerings over Western ones, and there's nothing wrong with that (until it comes time to judging both a Western IP and a Japanese one, then you're not going to show a fair balance of judgement).

To me, I see a balance between 3 MMO's at the moment, them being FFXIV, WoW and ESO, almost like a "big 3" of MMO's out there, that have high amount of users, and enough content/stories under their belts.
