Nintendo: SNES - ironically the only Nintendo system I have never owned. However, I did get to play it plenty. This system had some of the greatest games of all time on it, CHRONO trigger, ffvi, super Mario rpg, and many more. Only complaint is the controller sucked.

Sony: PS1 - the original PlayStation still has one of the best game libraries to date, as well as the best RPG of all time, Suikoden 2. It was an RPG powerhouse that destroys all other systems in that genre.

Microsoft: Xbox 360 - the 360 is my favorite system ever made. Microsoft did a freaking amazing job of expanding the possibilities in gaming and pushing new boundaries in games. Before the 360 I would pretty much just play RPG’s, but amazing games like halo and gears pushed my interests into new genre’s especially with the development of a proper online to go with them. It was also home to some of the best RPG’s of the generation with mass effect, lost odyssey, and tales of vesperia. Microsoft hit it out of the park that gen, at least for the first half.

Sega: genesis - this was my childhood. My favorite game of all time is shining force 2. I wish sega would pull their head out and make a proper new shining force game...

For me it's...

Sony: PlayStation 4 easily for numerous reasons. First and foremost, unless I'm mistaken, between AAA releases and indie games, I believe the PlayStation 4 can play more games than any other system in history, and what's more most of my favorite games ever are available for it! On top of that, it's also got IMO the best controllers out there, and furthermore remains among the most high end systems released to date in terms of graphical capabilities and all that to boot. This has also been a console generation that's really seen Sony come into their own when it comes to all-around compelling first-party releases, from Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy to the new God of War, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and well beyond. These games aren't just fun to play, they also have excellent storylines and so much more that go to prove the ongoing merits of single-player games in particular here in an era where they more largely seem to be fading into the background. It's also to be the exclusive home of my most anticipated game ever, The Last of Us Part II, and furthermore also the exclusive home of what is, for me, this year's most anticipated release as well: Death Stranding. PS4 has also had the best, most playable versions of many non-exclusives too.

Nintendo: Switch easily. In addition to some of the strongest first-party support I've yet seen Nintendo offer any of their systems, the Switch also now boasts a highly expansive indie library that includes many, many of my all-time favorite games, plays NES and retro arcade games too (as well as a handful of other old-school titles), and is also portable to boot. That last item is extra cool and distinctive!

(Like I've said before, I consider this current era to be the best in gaming history.)

Microsoft: Xbox 360. Whereas I hadn't been too impressed with the original Xbox, Microsoft had me right out of the gate with the 360, which released with such exclusives of appeal to yours truly as Perfect Dark Zero and Kameo: Elements of Power and quickly become my 7th gen platform of choice by beating the PS3 to the punch on numerous major and/or just awesome titles, including such examples as The Elder Scrolls IV, Portal, Mirror's Edge, Braid, BioShock, and Mass Effect. Even Final Fantasy XIII got a same-day international release on the 360. (Also, I thought Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts was cute.) Only from the second half of the 7th generation did the 360 start to become my second choice for that period.

Sega: Saturn. In a technical sense, the Saturn wasn't the highest-quality 5th generation console released at all, but it had a number of exclusives that I still enjoy playing today, including Magic Knight Rayearth, Shining Force III, NiGHTS Into Dreams, and the early Panzer Dragoon games. Not that this means much in retrospect, but the Saturn version of the original Tomb Raider was also the first version of that iconic game I got because it came out a whole week before the PlayStation version here, so a lot of my first memories with the Tomb Raider franchise are tied to the Saturn.

Yeah I'm pretty sure that what you said about the PS4 isn't true with all the games they added via backwards compatibility the X1 has just as many games available as the PS4.  The console that could play the most games was more then likely a early PS3 with full backwards compatibility since it  could play all PS1, PS2 and PS3 games.

I'll assume this doesn't include handheld consoles. I'll try to pick the console I actually prefer and not which one I think was most historically significant. Therefore consoles that are backwards compatible will automatically get a significant boost i.e. PS2+PS3 will beat PS1 by default.

Sega Saturn - Just an incredible selection of games, Panzer Dragoon series, Shining series, Nights, Virtua Fighter games, Dragon Force, it even has my favourite versions of Sonic 1-Knuckles in Sonic Jam. Mega Drive and Dreamcast are very close though so I'm not completely sure I can call this (this might be a running theme with the other consoles)

PS4 - I find it hard to choose between PS2, PS3 and PS4. PS1 is out since all of its games are available to play on PS2/PS3. I'll go with PS4 though, Sony's first party games are at their best in my opinion with Uncharted 4, Spider-Man, God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn and Shadow of the Colossus coming to mind. A lot of my favourite games from previous systems have been remastered for PS4 too, inlcuding many Final Fantasy games, Symphony of the Night, Secret of Mana, Shenmue 1&2, Uncharted 1-3, The Last of US, Kingdom Hearts games, Star Ocean games, several PS2 classics and a whole load of classic game collections. Then there are plenty of new 3rd party titles like Sonic Mania and Forces, Yooka Laylee, Bloodstained, Yakuza games, No Man's Sky, a ton of JRPGs and countless other good titles. I think I might own more games for PS4 than any other system. But probably the real tiebreaker is VR. It requires a peripheral but VR has greatly enhanced some existing games as well as introducing new ones, Wipeout, Tetris Effect and Astrobot really stand out to me.

Wii U and Switch (tied) - Wii U offers all Wii games and a ton of Virtual Console games that include some of my favourite games ever from NES, SNES and N64 (controls are off on N64 though). It also allows me to play some of my favourite Gamecube games like Windwaker, Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime Trilogy and Pikmin (through Wii mode). As well as some good Wii U titles like Mario 3D World, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Pikmin 3 and Yoshi. Meanwhile Switch offers upgraded ports of many key Wii U titles, some new games like Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade 2, Smash Bros Ultimate, Yoshi and Kirby. It also has many of the same Final Fantasy games as the PS4 and many of the third party titles on PS4 too. I feel like the Switch will end up winning this one as some of the older games from SNES, N64, Gamecube start showing up. The Switch also doubles as a handheld so that is a bonus in my opinion.

Xbox One, I guess - I don't actually own an Xbox One but it shares a lot of multiplatform games with PS4 and also offers quite a large number of Xbox 360 games and even some original Xbox ones like Panzer Dragoon. As for exclusives, I'm not too interested but I guess if I owned the console I might like a few. I think if I owned one, it would be my Xbox of choice more often than not. If I have to choose a console that I own, then Xbox 360 hands down.

I'm a bit surprised that I tended to go for modern consoles when I think the majority of my favourite games were released in the sixth gen or earlier, but backwards compatibility, remasters and remakes can really help newer consoles. Another thing that helps modern consoles is they generally have plenty of additional features that I like and the ability to store games digitally for convinience. I also enjoy using PS Now and would probably use Game Pass if I owned an Xbox One.

Nintendo: Switch. Amazing library of games so far, handheld AND home console, online needs a little work though.
Sony: Ehhhh, this is hard, don't really care for Playstation but I guess PS3. Last of Us and free online.
Microsoft: Tie between 360 and Xbox One. 360 had some amazing games to release on it, but I do love the One, The One X in particular, the interface is just so nice, the extra power really is something to behold.
Sega: The Dreamcast. Sonic Adventure, enough said.

Nah, no worries man, you're not a telepath and I didn't patent the idea. :)

Nintendo - GBA (if it has to be home console then Wii cause it has a Gamecube built in)
SEGA - Mega Drive
Sony - PS2 - Cause of course
Microsoft - Xbox 360 - Lot's of great co-op gaming and a great variety of games.
