Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Outer Worlds gameplay previews out

Various outlets have gone hands on with Obsidian's upcoming game The Outer Worlds and returned their findings.

Reminds me of Borderlands with companions and a LOT more dialogue. Looked kind of semi-open world and with linear encounter designs like Borderlands and that style of straight forward combat.

I hate companions, though, so I hope that isn't a major focus.

The town looked nice.

So if I buy it and like it, I can kiss a hypothetical sequel goodbye unless I buy an Xbox, or a gaming PC. That doesn't sound very appealing. Why the hell would I invest in that? Looks pretty cool though. First time I've seen any footage of it, trailers or otherwise, that may have already been released.

To be honest this isn't the sort of game I'd usually buy; I tried to get into Fallout last gen with 3 and I just didn't like it. Then again, that was  a long time ago, tastes change with age (for example I didn't like Metroid Prime first time I played it, now I love it) and the setting here looks a lot more interesting.

If its a decent conversion and I found myself with a few months without any interesting releases I may pick it up.

So its kinda like fallout...but not really? in a sci-fi space setting?

Still this looks a million times better than fallout 76.

Game looks great at 4k/60 frames. Looks like a unbuggy version of Fallout in Space. So far from what I have seen anyway.

Like a lot of early open-world and FPP games, Fallout 3 is extremely dated.  In terms of gameplay and content, Fallout 4 is worlds beyond it.  However, I didn't get much of a Fallout 3/NV/4 vibe from the (admittedly limited) videos in the OP.  It's more like they took a ton of dialogue stuff and married it to a straightforward style of gameplay, like a Borderlands or a Far Cry game.  Seemed more shooter-ish than Fallout, which is very exploration based rather than quest-hub based, though of course you can spray and pray in Fallout if you really want.

Personally, I play Fallout games in a very tactical manner, usually without companions, using a lot of mines, stealth, sniping, and environmental hazards, rather than brute force, so the combat in the videos didn't appeal to me as a Fallout fan.  However, I also loved Borderlands as an "arcade" shooter which brought its own quirks, so who knows.  Also, these previews tend to be very quick and dirty, as opposed to fans taking their time and finding different nuances, so I'm not going to judge just yet.

That's fair, I didn't spend a whole lot of time with Fallout so me likening this to it could be more due to it being developed by Obsidian and some of its superficial trappings and my own preconceived notions rather than them being all that alike at their core.

I don't blame you for that because that's what everyone has been saying since this game was announced.  Now that it's here, though, I really don't see it--at least, not with what we've been shown.  If it weren't for the existing Fallout connection and this was from a new studio, I doubt Fallout would even be the most common comparison.

I suppose the big comparison would be with Fallout: New Vegas because it will use the same "slideshow" ending to tell you the "consequences" of your choices.  Not really a fan of that, to be honest.  I much prefer what Fallout 4 does, which is let you keep playing after the "end" so you experience those consequences.

Yes cause MS doesnt allow games on other platforms?. I guess that game that was announced the other day for multi platform release must of been from Sony??.

Of course it's not impossible a potential sequel will be multi-plat, but, it might also become an exclusive. To deny that possibility is foolish. Especially as it concerns it's availability.... on.... what platform??? Do you you think a The Outer Worlds sequel is likely to appear on PS5 due to the rich history of Microsoft games releasing on Sony platforms????? Let's see, there's Minecraft, and the fairly unique circumstances that allowed that to happen.....And what???????? The Outer Worlds. A game that largely hits all the same benchmarks as Minecraft. Not quite ready for release, but well down the path to completion. Too close to being finished to make it an exclusive on a platform that is struggling, to be sure. Even beyond that, it's safe to assume that "t's" were crossed, and "i's" were dotted, and it simply had to appear on PS4 and Switch, barring some type of contract buyout that would render it's XBO exclusivity fiscally pointless.

"I guess that game that was announced the other day for multi platform release must of been from Sony??."

A shot at mean old Sony for still having exclusives, eh? Yeah, that's the whole idea behind being a platform holder. If a company has a platform, and they've been forced to shift from, or even abandon, that fundamental business practice, it's a good indicator that things aren't going so well, as opposed to, as one might infer from your comment, some kind of magnanimous gesture.

Only if Obsidian keep the rights to it, but it's being published by Private Division, so if they maintain the rights they can just get another developer to make a sequel.

Yeah, from what I can find from a couple different sources, Obsidian owns the IP, and Private Division owns the publishing rights.......But as Obsidian is now wholly owned by Microsoft, there would have to have been agreements made in the purchase that see Obsidian maintain some type of autonomy in controlling their own IP's for MS not to be in control now. And I don't know if that's the case. I can't find anything that would indicate it is. And of course, Microsoft could simply buy the publishing rights from Private Division and gain full control. It terms of what could happen, it's kind of a mess.
