Forums - Sales Discussion - The hardcore console market seems to be shrinking

I don't think the PS2 was a "hardcore" console... whatever that means. I mean, DVD player, easy piracy and all...

Even today, does that terminology even apply or mean anything? How "hardcore" are GTA, FIFA and Call of Duty, exactly

The Wii-U was hardcore. Custom PC building is hardcore. Everything else? Eh...

Yeah, I can't really believe the entire premise of this thread.  And especially can't believe anyone believing in its assumptions.  There are a plethora of threads here discussing what it means to be a "hardcore" gamer, and even those definitions barely hold up to scrutiny.  Trying to claim an entire console to be "hardcore" is just ridiculous.

If I can read the thread in its proper definition I might say it seems the non-Nintendo market seems to be shrinking because that appears to be the only manufacturer left out of this definition, and even that seems to be a ridiculous notion.  Console gaming is healthy on all ecosystems (even the XBoxOne's "failure" could be considered a success in several other generations), so to declare somehow that the sky is falling on some piece of that giant pie is bizarre.

Rename the thread to PS + Xbox market and it's less ambiguous what it is really about.

The PS4 and XB1 will attain a higher total than the PS3 and 360, but not by much. More countries got added to the mix over time, but global sales remain stagnant. It's basically a situation that differs on a per country basis. Japan is on the decline, the USA likely too. Numbers for other markets are very hard to come by, so it would involve a lot of guesswork. Growth areas are eastern Europe and southeast Asia.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV (360+PS3) would outsell SSBB. I was wrong.

Seems your PS4 estimates continue to randomly fluctuate (you now say 116m). For example, two years ago, pretty much to the day, you predicted 122m and 92m (your sig even reflects the higher number, yet in here, you're now saying 6m less).

Before that, it was: http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=8447914 and http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=8478470

In fact, you never expected it to even outsell the Wii.

So, my suggestion is to start considering real data, trends etc, etc... when making predictions/threads like this.

The market is shrinking by the evidence of PS4 breaking record as fastest 100M seller right?

A lot of casuals getting swallowed up by smartphones I think...

I don't have actual data to back it up but I think the _gaming_ market as a whole has never been larger. Mobile gaming (android, iOS), PC gaming, dedicated platform gaming (consoles + switch) combined I think have made gaming largest it's ever been. You can try and slice it however you want hard core vs casual vs nintendo (apparently), SONY vs MS vs Nintendo, but it doesn't seem like anyone or anything related to gaming is dieing.

Even with MS having pretty big issues with its current gen console is still raking in the big bucks and does not seem like they are ready to drop out of the dedicated console market.

Marketshare of consoles are shrinking, mobile is/has taking over.

I dont agree with the OP but let's not pretend like PS4=the market.

It isn't the market, but the "hardcore gaming is dead", "console gaming is dead", etc premisse besides being ludicrous is easy to dismiss when we see PS4 breaking records.

For sure but the OP said nothing about anything being dead.
