Forums - Sales Discussion - Splatoon 2 has sold nearly as much as God of War PS4 and Horizon Zero Dawn individually

https://www.ign.com/articles/2019/05/21/god-of-war-sales-have-passed-10-million

https://blog.us.playstation.com/2019/02/28/horizon-zero-dawn-celebrates-second-anniversary-10-million-copies-sold-worldwide/

https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/finance/software/index.html

I at least find the number comparison interesting, especially as I've heard from at least one source that Splatoon 2 is still selling about as much if not more than those at 60 versus the PS4 games decreased prices (and probably more sources can verify that)

Just an interesting tidbit if nothing else. Regardless of price context I would not have thought Splatoon could match the sales of God of War.

The Democratic Nintendo fan....is that a paradox? I'm fond of one of the more conservative companies in the industry, but I vote Liberally and view myself that way 90% of the time?

Nintendo 1st party titles always do insanely well.
I'd say part of it, is Playstation caters to a more diverse group, with tastes that go all over the place.
So their games sales in titles usually dont match up to how well, some of these nintendo IP do.

These tates that go everywhere, lead people to playing more things (3rd party)....
so their own 1st party dont enjoy as high attachrates as nintendo titles do on their platform.

Some Sony titles have done well though:
God of War ~12m
Uncharted 4 ~16m
HZD ~10m
GTsports ~8m
Spiderman ~14m
Last of Us ~19m (cross gen)

If compaired, Mario Kart 8 (cross gen) will soon overtake Last of Us.
Mario Odessey will soon overtake Uncharted 4.
Smash and Spiderman are neck and neck.
Pokémon let's go will soon overtake HZD
..
.

Nintendo titles do really well, and have really high attachrates amoung their userbase on their platforms.
Then you have to remember its basically a 40m vs 100m compairison.
Makes the nintendo 1st party look even more insane.

And the reality that Nintendo games don't really do discounts like other companies do, so they are making far more profit off each game sold.

Nintendo is just a software selling phenomenon and afaik most years is the top publisher in the video games business (possibly excluding mobile games, not sure how they stack up to Tencent etc), due to their impeccable reputation that they ofcourse earned through their super polished and consistently (for almost 40 years) top level games output.

It's been out a year longer than God of War aswell. Horizon is a new IP so that was an achievement in itself. Splatoon 2 was always going to be big, Splatoon 1 was a big win for Nintendo.

Not at all true. You're taking into account that those discount prices are all bought at retail. When most likely they are a combination of digital and retail. A game that's on discount digitally can make more profit than a full priced game at retail.

Also taking into consideration that Sony has bigger digital sales than Nintendo. And at launch and with full priced digital and deluxe editions. A profit per unit can be a lot higher in Sony's favor.

Overall it's not a 1-1 comparison. There is also different currencies to take into consideration.

I haven't heard of Splatoon 2 crossing 10M.

duduspace11 "Well, since we are estimating costs, Pokemon Red/Blue did cost Nintendo about $50m to make back in 1996"

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

I said nearly, not at that point.

Not only does Nintendo sell their games for full price with very rare discounting, but from a development perspective I bet Splatoon 2 was far cheaper to make than GoW and/or Horizon. Nintendo has to be making some serious cash. The Switch lineup is less diverse in comparison to the ps4, so it makes sense Switch games have a high attach rate.
