Forums - PC Discussion - I Want to Play More On PC, But Non-Sale Steam Prices Are Ridiculous

your answer is in the OP really... you should shop around and buy things when they're on offer. Thrifty gaming doesn't always get the new releases or all the releases but just shop around and get titles that you're interested in when they're on offer, I'm sure if you're like myself or most gamers you probably have a backlog with at least 20+ titles in it which are all great AAA games you've probably really wanted to play for years, go play those and wait for a sale.

Never buy on Steam if there are cheaper alternatives on GOG (or others, GOG has the additional benefit of no DRM, reducing possible problems and incompatibilities and leaving the game working forever, even if store and publisher cease to exist, although IIRC, Steam promises to deal better than competitors with this issue, should it happen) or on physical copies either online or on physical stores.

I buy on GoG if at all possible. Even games that also happen to come out for PS4. I don't mind going digital, so long as I am offered fair prices, and no DRM.

Edit: Hell, I'll even take the mild DRM of Steam. Just give me consistent and fair prices. None of this JC Penny Pricing nonsesnse! Price the games at what you intend to sell them at!

Yep, on Steam, and not only there, we often see the extreme degeneration of heavy discounts-driven markets, the actual pricing loses a lot of transparency, and if for any reason the buyer falls outside of usual discounts, things become ugly.

Why the heck can't Steams pricing be more like Nintendo's digital pricing?

I'll admit, it took me until here to realize this was sarcasm.

Almost got me there.

If only there were something called a used games market on those systems!

Yeah Anno 1800 is £49.99... lol.

TBH the same thing happens on consoles, for digital games with certain publishers. Regularly you'll get EA/Ubisoft games launching for ridiculous prices like £59.99 on the PlayStation store, while being £39.99 or £44.99 for the physical copy.

So if PC games still released physically as well you could probably avoid this inflated digital prices by publishers.

Fortunately all those consoles have physical releases to combat the inflated digital prices. I don't really miss physical on PC, but this is one reason to.

To correct the OP, the retailer hasn't been cut out of the deal on Steam. Steam is the retailer, and they take a that is often much larger than that taken by Best Buy.

To correct the thread in general - it makes no difference who sets the prices on Steam. It is a fact that the prices are higher on average, and that's all that matters in the context of the OP.

I did point out that the publishers are to blame. "Anyway, it's pretty apparent that for many companies like Square Enix, Capcom, Koei Techmo, Ubisoft, etc., the regular Steam Price of a game is just a B.S. listing made to get you to jump whenever a sale happens."

GoG all the way.

I wouldn't bother with a key reseller site unless I was 100% sure that the dev isn't getting screwed over in some way.

I've never been screwed over by GMG for years. It's scummy as hell key seller sites like G2A you want to watch out for.

You can use GMG to grab Steam keys, or even keys for clients like Uplay as well.

I'm not going to stop using Steam because a few greedy af publishers want more money for doing less. I'd rather just use one of Steam's amazing features, and slap those publishers/games on my ignore/block list and instead focus on other games that offer me better value and content. No other client(that I know of) seems to offer such an amazing feature, and it also helps me to avoid temptation of buying a game, I wasn't intending to buy, as well as filtering out genres I don't want to see (like Turn based strat games).

Wait, I thought GMG was just another key reseller site. On their main site they claim to get all their content directly from the publisher. If true, then that would be exactly what I'm looking for. Prices for Assassin's Creed, RE7, X-Com 2 Collection, etc. are all in line with retail, or slightly better. They aren't timed sales, just regular prices.

Can anybody verify that GMG is not a key reseller site like Kinguin or G2A? Can somebody prove that they do indeed get their games directly from publishers?

It's not a key reseller like G2A. They are supplied directly by the publishers as are these sites:

https://www.humblebundle.com/store
https://www.fanatical.com/en/
https://www.greenmangaming.com/
https://www.gamersgate.com/
https://www.indiegala.com/
https://www.chrono.gg/

Can almost always get games on GMG cheaper than steam (when there isn't a sale) as they usually have a 10% off code.

Ubisoft even have a GMG support page: https://support.ubi.com/en-gb/Faqs/000032880/Activating-your-purchase-from-Green-Man-Gaming
