Hello VGC,

I want to buy a VR device for my gaming Laptop.

My PC is:

16GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 (laptop)
i7-7700HQ CPU @2.8 Ghz

According to OculusCompatCheck, that should be enough.

So, which headset can you recommend?

It comes down to Vive vs Rift.
Which Oculus Rift version is the best one?

I have yet to inform myself.

Between the two, I only have experience with Vive Pro and Oculus Rift DK2 (which was developer version), so not a fair comparisson since Vive is much better.
Currently, Valve Index is probably the best one comercially available, not so much due to headset itself, but for its controllers.

We still need to wait for probably quite a while until tetherless, hi-res, 210 degree horizontal FOV with eyetracking VR set hits the market.

with those pc specs it would be a waste to go for the high end HMDs, as you can't render enough pixels to feed their high res displays

the original Oculus Rift CV1 and the Oculus Rift S both are very competent offerings with great controllers/tracking and should work OK with your laptop

the only big advantage the original Vive has is that it's tracking system (best in class - v2 however increases the max tracking volume) is forward compatible and that there are several high end sets you could upgrade to in the future, but the controllers are a bit less advanced and the whole package probably is still quite a bit more expensive

you could also go for one of the Windows mixed reality sets from acer, lenovo, hp, dell or asus, which are all pretty much the same (apart from more expensive/higher res Samsung Odyssey and HP Reverb) - they should definitely be the cheapest option for "decent" PC VR, but MS hasn't really updated the platform, it's tracking and controllers are clearly a lvl below the others (but better than PSVR/Moves)
