Forums - Gaming Discussion - PC passes PS4 to become Ubisoft's biggest earner

On a semi-unrelated note, this will be a great way to see how Stadia is doing over the coming years, I assume it'll be listed as a platform.

I thought PC gaming was dying like 10 years ago???

PC and Nintendo have been dying for hundreds of years now. Any century now and it will just be Apple and Google left... Woops, I mean Microsoft and Sony.

I think you missed his point. In the past decade, even when they had PC exclusives and the consoles didn't have anything, sales of PC games still got dwarfed by console game sales. But PC gaming is a growing force, and this here is showing how it's evolving

This isn't true. The last time the PC had an exclusive and the consoles (PS3/360) didn't have anything was Settlers 7 in March 2010, when it WON against the PS3/360 that had nothing. On the rare occasion when PC gets exclusives and Consoles get nothing, it wins. It has won quarters where multiplat titles have launched as well.

Anno 1800 (Q1 2019/2020) - PC Won, no console titles.

Anno 2205 (Q3 2015/2016) - PC Lost. Anno 2205 bombed was the worst game in the series, AC Syndicate launched same quarter.

Might & Magix X Legacy (Q4 2013/2014) - PC Won. South Park Stick of Truth launched same quarter.

PC only won if you divide PS3 and PS4. Otherwise, Playstation comes up to 33% vs 24% on PC. Considering the game flopped enough on PC that they cut support after just 2 months with game-breaking bugs in the game, a total win would have been seriously troubling.

Shootmania Storm (Q1 2013/2014) - PC Won (Tied with 360), Comparatively small unsuccessful title. Far Cry Blood Dragon launched this quarter also.

Like you said, it only tied. And that's against a dying console generation.

Might & Magic Heroes VI + Anno 2070 (Q3 2011/2012) - PC Lost, Reason: Console dominated Q3, Just Dance released on Wii selling a crapton, Assassins Creed Revelation pushed 360/PS3. Rayman Origins multiplat release.

2 Big releases and yet PC lost. Badly.

Settlers 7 (Q4 2009/2010) - PC Beat PS3/360, lost to Wii. Red Steel 2 launched on Wii this quarter, Wii just being the Wii. PS3/360 had no notable releases this quarter.

Wii won, not PC, period

PC has won even when there's been other multiplat titles released in the same quarter. PC losing when it has received a major exclusive and consoles have had nothing has not happened and would be shocking if it did.

A PC Win is completely expected.

None of these were clear wins or even close to wins in some regards.

But I think you misunderstood me, or I was just no clear enough when I wrote past decade. As this decade is not the past decade. I meant the period between 2000 and 2010, not the past 10 years. After all, PC gaming being dead was proclaimed during the early last gen. Though possibly in the early 2000's was still strong enough against consoles to get some wins (notably with the Settlers and early Anno titles, for instance), but I seriously doubt so after 2005.

PC gaming is making a comeback. And with Ryzen and Navi provoking pricedrops for gaming hardware, it's also getting more accessible to more and more people.

Console gaming as a whole was "Dying" in 2012.

Not too surprising. Sony isn't incentivizing SW sales with a price cut to the PS4 like they did with PS2, instead they keep the price high and reap HW profits.

uhh, good sales?

Could say exactly the same about console exclusives as well.

It's amusing the hell out of me, how years after joining this site, the same mentality rears it's ugly head, whenever PC is above something this site considers "legit" important or of value to pay attention to.

Ya'll congrat Sony exclusives reaching 10m, but I don't see many of you doing the same, in regards to this new event, unfolding for Ubisoft.

I must have missed it, which exclusives did Ubisoft release on the consoles in this report?

Except it's about the sales, not the exclusives.

Look again.

If you want to talk about exclusives not being sold on your console of choice, look at when PC has the same sort of thing.

Hell, Crash TR is on every other platform, but PC, let's use that as your sales example and roll with that instead.

And the sales are due to the only new game they launched for the quarter being exclusive to PC....

And yet, look at Crash TR, which isn't on PC....

I get your mentality behind your OG comment within this thread, but at the same time, I don't think it's anything special, as the OG comment made the overall sales out to be.

It's interesting to see PC as their most profitable platform this year.  Let's translate their %'s into euro amounts to see what is really going on.

Ubisoft net bookings (in millions of euros)

2018 % 2018 net 2019 % 2019 net
PS4 38% 145.0 31% 97.4
XB1 22% 83.9 18% 56.6
PC 24% 91.6 34% 106.8
NSW 5% 19.1 5% 15.7
Mobile 7% 26.7 7% 22.0
Old Consoles 1% 3.8 0% 0.0
Other 3% 11.4 5% 15.7
total 381.5 314.2

Looks like almost every category is down in net bookings except PC and Other.  Kind of makes sense when you realize that Sony/Microsoft consoles are getting old, and that is where most of their investment is.  However profits from PC gaming is definitely up for them.  I wonder if the Epic game store is helping them out?  I would think a major new platform like that would increase PC game sales across the board.

Sales are down on Sony/Microsoft because there were zero games launched this quarter this year. Age doesn't reduce software sales, on the contrary software sales usually increase the further into a generation you get.

Last year Far Cry 5 launched just before the quarter started (So week 2 onwards were in Q1) and Crew 2 launched at the end of the quarter. This year nothing, this is why ubisoft sales for Sony/Microsoft are down.
