Forums - General Discussion - Massive arson attack against Kyoto Animation leaves upwards of 20 dead, dozens injured

KYOTO -- An explosion at an animation studio here on the morning of July 18 has left 14 people dead, and over 10 others are in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest, police and firefighters said.

A man allegedly entered the No. 1 studio of the Kyoto Animation building in Fushimi Ward in the western Japan city of Kyoto at around 10:30 a.m., poured what appeared to be gasoline around while screaming, "Go die," and set fire to it. The man was injured and admitted to a hospital.

A plastic container and a knife were found left at the scene. The 41-year-old suspect told prefectural police that he set fire to the building. Police are treating the case as arson.

At least 36 people were injured, and 10 of them seriously. Some of them are unconscious. Moreover, there are some people who remain unaccounted for, leading investigators to suspect that they are trapped inside the structure.

About 30 fire engines were mobilized to extinguish the fire. About 70 people including employees were in the No. 1 studio at the time of the incident.

The three-story No. 1 studio, with a total floor space of about 700 square meters, was burned down in the blaze.

Absolutely horrific scenes out of Kyoto today. This is one of the largest acts of mass violence in modern Japanese history.

It should be noted that within the oppressive, grueling anime industry, Kyoto Animation was held up as the gold standard in employee treatment. They worked regular hours, did no paid overtime and had a family culture (the company's day nursery was on the building's second floor). Absolutely revolting attack.

The perpetrator managed to light himself on fire too and is in an induced coma in hospital. If he survives, he will likely be hung after a long period of solitary confinement (as he deserves). May the deceased rest in peace.

This is horrible!

Not sure if it was a angry employee, a fan, or random loon.... but this sort of thing is the worst.

I went to check, If I'd seen any of their work... sure enough, "Clannad" & "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya".

I'm surprised that it would be Kyoto A for either a mad fan or a employee.

The later because Kyoto is reputed to have much better conditions than other anime studios. Sort of like Insomniac versus...._______, insert a name here.

The former because I don't think Kyoto A has done anything super controversial since at least Endless Eight. That was years ago, and I can't think that any controversy that would anger someone that much.

I mean this is what I am half worried would happen to Game Freak, not Kyoto A.

The Democratic Nintendo fan....is that a paradox? I'm fond of one of the more conservative companies in the industry, but I vote Liberally and view myself that way 90% of the time?

Did he set fire on it and it exploded? Damn.
So sad, hope the injuried can get better soon, and the deceased family and friends can find some comfort.

Comfornt isnt easily found, when you lose a family member to a loon burnt them to death.
Grief and anger, at a world where people seemingly do that sort of thing, is probably all that fills your mind for months afterwards.

Of all the studios it had to be the one with the most loving and caring employers and employees. People who's job it is to bring joy to the world and that's how they are repaid. It's heart wrenching.

There is a gofundme campaign for the victims created by Sentai Filmworks.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Really sad news :(

I wonder what fuelled the guy to do that...

If you require alcohol to have fun, then you have a problem

probably an ex employee.
