Nintendo Switch Lite Officially Revealed - $199, September 20th, Dedicated Handheld

Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo Switch Lite Officially Revealed - $199, September 20th, Dedicated Handheld

I like how they always show people in their ads playing with a handheld when they're clearly somewhere where they definitely should be doing something else. Not a single person enjoying their handheld while traveling or on commute, i.e. the most appropriate use case.

Does the Switch dock cost Nintendo less than the $60 Sony and MS charge to allow online multiplayer?

(I thought PS4 and XB1 both sold at a profit this gen https://www.techinsights.com/blog/playstation-4-vs-xbox-one-teardown-comparison)

Yes it does, and yes both Sony and MS are greedy on their charging of multiplayer (but not sure why you are asking since Nintendo isn't doing much better on charging for online are they?)

PS4 and X1 sold for a loss at the start of the gen. Sony said they broke even with one game and PS+ sold with a console. That is were the 50 loss per HW assumption comes from (there is no precise and official loss per HW).

Selling HW at a loss at the start of the generation is a strategy used for over 20 years on console world and have nothing to do with not being able to manage own finances or HW being undesireable.

Nintendo has charged me a total of $20 to play online on both their handheld and home consoles for the past 14 years. So yeah, I think that's MUCH better than the competition. Given I'd pay $20/yr for the NES catalog, online multi is still free for me.

Nintendo is greedy when they don't sell their hardware at a loss.
They get complaints when they don't discount their games after the launch hype has worn off.
They get complaints about the price of their online service.

How exactly is Nintendo supposed to make money?

(Basing something's value on how much each component part costs is almost as bad as communism)

Don't Play Stationary 4 ever. Switch!

Just want to point out that the Switch had shortages for, what, the first six months of its life? And iirc was still supply constrained to some extant for the first year?
Lowering the opening price would not have improved sales when you're already selling all of your available stock.

Even Xbox had shortage for 1 or 2 months.

Switch didn't really outsold what PS4 sold on launch. So clearly there were space for both more supply and more demand.

Your first argument is the same of people that said they would pay 60 on XBL or PS just for the discount and free games. Myself I don't play MP at all, still have the sub for like 4 years.

Have I said Nintendo is greedy for not selling the HW at loss? Nope, I said for me it is overprice considering the other HW released selling for 50 loss while Switch would be 50 profit.

Nintendo get this complains and deserve it and you know it. Their online was much worse and even Nintendo community complained to pay for it on that state. Every company discount their games from 6-12 months after release and forward.

MS and Sony are making money, so not sure why wouldn't Nintendo make money. It is more like some people preffer to defend Nintendo on what they do that is  less value than the competitors. Like it is some kind of pleasure to pay more for the same.

duduspace11 "Well, since we are estimating costs, Pokemon Red/Blue did cost Nintendo about $50m to make back in 1996"

Mr Puggsly: "Hehe, I said good profit. You said big profit. Frankly, not losing money is what I meant by good. Don't get hung up on semantics"

Lol, overpriced because it isn't sold at a loss...

MS and Sony also advertise on their OS dashboard, Nintendo doesn't. Making money on a product is kind of the point.

In 2017, Switch's first year, there were global shortages of mobile parts that Switch needed; since they make way more money than any gaming system, mobile phones got first dibs on those parts, so the supply issue wasn't something Nintendo could just click their fingers and fix.

I can see why a non-Nintendo fan would get confused but if you look at the list of games for Gold since September (NES online launch), Super Mario Bros 3 has probably outsold them all combined.

Have I said Nintendo is greedy for not selling the HW at loss? Nope, I said for me it is overprice considering the other HW released selling for 50 loss while Switch would be 50 profit.

The comments weren't directed at you, they were a general observation but you seem to agree with all 3 points if we change 'greedy' to 'overpriced'. It's easy to sell HW at a $50 loss when you're making nearly $60 in pure profit from the subscription.

Nintendo get this complains and deserve it and you know it. Their online was much worse and even Nintendo community complained to pay for it on that state. Every company discount their games from 6-12 months after release and forward.

The service might be a lot worse but the price is a lot better. "Every" company discounts their games because they have to. Call of Dutys and Mario Karts don't. It's not Nintendo's fault that 'every' other game isn't able to hold it's value like Nintendo games do.

MS and Sony are making money, so not sure why wouldn't Nintendo make money. It is more like some people preffer to defend Nintendo on what they do that is  less value than the competitors. Like it is some kind of pleasure to pay more for the same.

They make most of their cash from 3rd parties and greedy subscriptions. I'd rather Nintendo profits from making games and hardware that retain their resale/trade-in value than subscriptions and bargain bin games.

So joy cons are compatible for tabletop mode but yet i don't see that stander attachment like the OG switch.
Any chance that they will make an individual stander like that one for the wii u gamepad?

Maybe the OG Switch ones will still work for it?

Ehhh... So are you saying that for tabletop mode on switch lite you need to have an OG switch and put behind a switch lite to use as a stander? Not the cheapest and most practical option but ok.

Oh lol sorry that wasnt what I meant.

I mean the individual stander you buy for the OG Switch might still be used for the Switch Lite.

Then, vita is overprice too for $250 hardware + almost $50 memory card?

"Nintendo get this complains and deserve it and you know it" "Every company discount their games from 6-12 months after release and forward" Yeah, deserve to make money on hardware and software more than Sony since they know how to manage their own finance and make games that still hold value after several years unlike the others

"It is more like some people preffer to defend Nintendo on what they do that is  less value than the competitors. Like it is some kind of pleasure to pay more for the same." That's the same when Sony fans defend censorship on ps4 by Sony and enjoy some 3rd party games on ps4 with way less contents
