Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo Switch Lite Officially Revealed - $199, September 20th, Dedicated Handheld

.......Why?

I mean, its still going to sell well. The Switch is more than successful enough so that even if they make some missteps here and there, it wont stop its current sales momentum. But I dont get why they needed to make a handheld only Switch, with no docking, just to make it 100 dollars cheaper and risk mudding the message.I mean, at the end of the day(personally), you are offering less and the discount isnt worth it.No switching, which is the Switch biggest draw, no IR camera, no HD rumble, no joycons(so no second controller out of the gate), and locking yourself out of some games, like 1-2 Switch, Labo, Super Mario Party, World of Goo and many more.

And I mean, its not like the Switch is that much expensive. If you look hard enough, you could find a regular Switch, with one game, for probably 250.And that was last year.Imagine the potential discounts we would get this year. And if price was the problem, why not just lower it?Im fairly certain that the Switch dosent cost as much as it did when it launched, and while I dont think Nintendo could lower it to 200 dollars without losing money, I tryuly believe they could make it 250 dollars and bundled with a game, and still get a good profit out of every unit.Seeing how extremelly well the Switch has been selling, this price cut would make the sales soar.

And as I said, while I still believe the Lite will sell well, specially in Japan, I dont think it will be the runaway success Nintendo probably thinks it will be.Actually, I will be very interested to know the sales split betwenn the Switch and the Lite version this fall.

I just think this wasnt necessary, you know?Just drop the price, if you think it is too expewnsive for the casual crowd.I mean, the Pro is comming after all, now that the leak was confirmed.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Now I just need to wait for them to announce the other model and I'll finally be satisfied.

Portable-only is a big no from me but nice for those interested. Sales in Japan will explode.
Also, I wonder if the current Switch will see a price cut.

I doubt it. $100 extra for home console functionality comes across as good value with Switch Lite as a reference point, plus sales of the original Switch have increased this year on a global basis.

Conversely, a $250 original Switch would make the $200 Switch Lite look less attractive.

EDIT: The long-running rumor about Switch revisions was about a smaller, cheaper version and a modest upgrade to the original Switch, for the latter it was pointed out that it won't be something like the Pro was for the PS4. It's likely that this modest upgrade replaces the original Switch (which is going to be phased out) and occupies the same $300 price point.

That is because Switch was overpriced from the beggining.

What are you even responding to? There are multiple points in my post.

But in any case, you are wrong.

You saying the 100 USD difference from Lite to regular for the dock isn't good value on the regular. And that is because the regular was overpriced.

Reading peoples reactions online to Switch Lite has been amusing. A good chunk of "hardcore" gamers are either confused or pissed off that Nintendo didn't announce a pro model.

This is fantastic news for Nintendo, I expect big things from this revision.

Overpriced???  It is a hybrid system with a really nice large display, with a TV dock.  The PSP was $250, wasn't near as powerful, didn't have a dock and had a smaller screen.

How is regular overpriced? It is cheaper than devices released a decade or more ago, and with inflation that's insane.

You think the console should've been priced like the Vita or PSP even though it has more functions than those two, plus being able to play actual home console games?

This seems like one of the worst revisions I have seen. I can understand having a more portable focused unit... but to completely take away the ability to display it on a tv? That’s a horrible sacrifice. Certainly not something I would ever consider getting...

Eh, i'm conflicted on how I feel about this. $200 is a great price point but i'm not sure the amount of features you lose as a result is a good trade off. No docking, no detachable joy-cons (so no 2 controllers right out the gate), some games can't even be played on it like Super Mario Party, etc. The only improvements seem to be slightly better battery life, an actual d-pad, and of course it's smaller and lighter.

Feels like it ruins the original message of what the Switch is by taking away one of the main features, but at the same time it is just a cheaper entry model for a specific crowd rather than replacing the original so I dunno.

But then on the other hand for people who only use their current Switches in handheld mode and never docked (the people this is aimed for), perhaps these changes aren't something they would have ever cared about to begin with, so in that case this is a pretty good deal for them.

Either way i'll just stick with the regular Switch when I eventually buy one, or perhaps just wait to see if they actually do upgrade it in the future.
