Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Best year for a Nintendo system?

What in your view is the best year for games that a Nintendo system has ever had?

For moi it was Wii's 2010; Mario Galaxy 2, Monster Hunter Tri, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Sin & Punishment 2, No More Heroes 2, Goldeneye 007 remake, Kirby's Epic Yarn, COD Black Ops, Sonic Colours, Sonic All Stars Racing, Red Steel 2...

Still the record for the most games I've ever bought for a single system in a given year. (12)

For me, it has to be 2017 for the Switch.
There’s the obvious 4: Breath of the Wild, MK8D, Splatoon 2, and Super Mario Odyssey.
Then after that, I had Sonic Mania, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Fire Emblem Warriors, Mario & Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, NBA 2K18, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, Fast RMX, and Sonic Forces.

The Switch absolutely needed to get off to a strong start with a great first year and that’s exactly what it did which helps make it the best year for a Nintendo system I’ve seen to date.

I agree with you. 2010 was great! I still remember getting both Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid Other M for my Birthday that year.

Close second would be 2017.

2013 for the 3DS was pretty good.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Pokemon X/Y
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
Fire Emblem: Awakening
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team
Rune Factory 4
Shin Megami Tensei IV
Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan

Snes's 1994
We got Final Fantasy VI, which to me is the pinnacle of the series, plus Breath of Fire 2, Super Metroid, Donkey Kong Country, Killer Instinct, Demon's Crest, Megaman X2, Earthbound, Earthworm Jim. Those were the days I tell you

Wii's 2010 and N64's 1998 come as close seconds.

I'm jumping all over SNES 1994. Super Metroid alone.....I used to play sports games quite a bit back then too, and Ken Griffey Jr. MLB was another fav from that year. Gonna toss in Mortal Kombat 2 and Super Street Fighter 2 as well.

I wish it was still 1994.

1994, 1995, 2007 (especially including the last few weeks of 2006), 2010, 2017.

Handhelds has so many great years it’s difficult to keep track: but 2006-2010 was a phenomenal period on DS as well, and part of what made that period so strong for Nintendo (no video game company has yet topped that).

1995 in Japan would have been a banner year too: it had DKC2, Chrono Trigger, Terranigma (in Japan, Western release following year), Dragon Quest 6, Tales of Phantasia (Japan, no western release until MUCH later), Siemens Densetsu 3 (Trials is Mana), and Genealogy of the Holy War was only a short time later in March 1996.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

2017 was a great year!

Pocky Lover Boy!

I'll go old school and say 1987 on the NES (in North America), which claims a number of great games and the debuts of many video game franchises:

Castlevania
Kid Icarus
Metroid
Legend of Zelda
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out
Mega Man
Double Dribble
Rad Racer
Goonies II
Rygar
Rush'n Attack
Ikari Warriors

Switch: SW-3707-5131-3911
XBox: Kenjabish

Still 1998 because Ocarina of Time and Link’s Awakening DX came out. A year with a Zelda game is always a contender for me by default, let alone one where two of my all-time favorites released. Speaking more generally, 1998 is the year when many games released that wound up being favorites to this day.

But yeah, 2017 was pretty great, definitely the best in a very, very long time.
