X has a really unique and interesting story and the battle system is excellent. I love me some X. I also loved XII. Really the only FF games I don't like 8s VIII and anything past XII.

Final Fantasy XV was bad compared to X, and this is coming from someone who quite liked XV. I think X has one of the most memorable cast out of all the Final Fantasy games, each character feels unique and authentic. Has one of the best battle systems too, where you can switch characters on the fly in battle.

I know X is widely loved out there but I didn't like it quite as much.
The thing is, as you fear, not only is the game linear but it feels quite a chore to play it.
It's not actually bad but it's just too boring to play.
I didn't like most of the story, the blitzball game is a pain, and most of the chars are really uninteresting (some are great, tho).
I would say it's still worth playing but you won't really get that epic adventure you might be expecting.
X-2 in the other hand is a lot more fun to play, but that's it, it's not boring but it's even weaker storywise (X actually ends up in a high note storywise after the first horrible half) and as a game in a whole.
Again, still worth playing, but it's nothing close to what FF represents.
It's a good game, a bit too boring, but still a good game.

Edit: FF XII in the other hand is a masterpiece, get is asap.

Really, wasn't it excellent enough already, if you liked XV you'll are in for a threat with it.

Interesting comment.. what you just wrote is exactly what i fear i will feel while playing but i guess i just have to try it out and see for myself. What does FF represent the best in your opinion ? what are the best games ?

As for FFXII aghh don't do this to me xD .. masterpiece huh ? i do love how the game looks remastered on ps4 but again the world and design and characters just not my taste. Tell me one more thing how is the story of XII and the main character cause i heard it's mehh ?

XII and IX are my favorites. Both are VERY different but superb in what they are.

XII main character, Vaan, might be one of the worst in the series, not because he is actually bad, but he just doesn't add anything to the game at all, but don't worry, there are great characters in your party (like Balthier and Fran) and even if Vaan doesn't add to the game the story is amazing.

The game feels like a MMORPG being played solo, so there is a lot track you away from the story but it is great, the soundtrack is also marvelous, don't let people tell you otherwise because it's quite different, it's epic. The artstyle is lovely, at least in my old TV and PS2 it looks incredible, it's one of the best looking games from 6th gen. The combat is both action and turn based, but the gambit system is the star here, letting you choose how you play, it can even play itself if you want that, lol.

FF XII is really different from the typical JRPG like FF IX is the embodiment of it, but boy is it good.

FF XII is actually my favorite game in the series, even if IX is as ridiculously good as it also is.

Between X and XII there is not even what to think, honestly, XII wipes the floor with X so bad it's not even fun.

But still, X may be boring to play (not the combat, the game) and not come close to XII, but you should indeed try it. FF is famous for having a widely spreaded fanbase, there is even people who'll vocal XII like me while others hate it, or say VIII is the very best when it's one of the weakest IMO... you can't really base it in anyone but yourself, whatever you think about it there will be a good bunch that will agree and a whole lot that will disagree xD

FFX has a strong story like FFVIII and very good music. The battle system is also quite fun and is an embodiment of turn based JRPGs. The linearity is about as linear as Star Ocean Till the End of Time. Many places you must go, but also very open. The world is very immersive, and the story forces you to think about what is right. The environments are very varied from a tropical island to a cold mountain. There will definitely be technology and interesting weapons around it.

Geez.

- Final Fantasy X is a very Linear game. Period. Optional stuff is available, but it doesnt make that go away.
- Final Fantasy X's battle system is good in concept but not the greatest execution. Very low enemy variety will lead to samey battles - Once you find a way to quickly dispatch one the small selection of enemy formations in each area you will just repeat it. The game needed a lot more enemy variety/formation to pull of it what it wanted.
- Final Fantasy 12 is the pinnacle of Final Fantasy

Oh! Because of the way experience works you will find yourself needlessly switching in characters not really needed to make sure they stay leveled

I dont mean just to point you out, but this is not trure. Locations are NOT very open. Very few areas in the game even allow to veer off the main path more than a few feet.

I don't want to spoil anything, but regarding lack of technology, you can see a highly technologically advanced city in the game's famous opening intro that you may have seen before.

But it is true that you'll hardly see places like this in the game, for story purposes I won't get into.

I also wasn't a fan of the way many of the characters in this game commonly dress. Which is most of the NPC's, Wakka, and Tidus. But most of the main cast didn't dress this way. Lulu, Auron, Yuna, and to a degree Rikku, didn't have this weird segmented mix-and-unmatch thing going on.

If you liked the combat system of FF7, I imagine you'd like FFX's. Though as someone else pointed out, I too found FFX-2's gameplay to be better, but its story was weaker. And I thought FFX's story was pretty interesting.

For me ffx was good, but I always thought that ff9 was the last great ff, so I would recommend any ff game from 6 to 9 including ff tactics, if you like ff7 have you considered other psx rpgs?,like suikoden 2, xenogears, grandia, chrono cross, lunar? Many of these games are available on ps3.

I suppose I did not mean to say "very", but it is open enough that you can usually go anywhere you have been, and by the end of the game you can go almost anywhere plus a few extra areas. It is somewhat similar to FFVII and FFVIII, while they both have big worlds there is hardly any reason to veer off the main path.
