Does this affect your decision to get the game?

No, still hyped. 24 39.34%

Yes, hype gone, not buying. 10 16.39%

Eh, I don't like this but will wait and see. 10 16.39%

Eh, I hate this, but will get it anyway. 13 21.31%

Wasn't getting it from the start. 4 6.56%

Total:61

This is absolutely ridiculous. Why would the series that proudly invented the "Go Catch'Em All" motto NOT allow you to catch them all? At least Ruby/Sapphire had the pokemon programmed on it. This looks like they won't even bother with that.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Hmmm, this will be very interesting to watch. How they did the cut? It is very obvious that insanely popular like Lucario and Charizard MUST be there. To be honest, I don't think they can cut ANY of the original 151 from any future game soon. If I stop any person of around 30 years old and speak about voltorb, the person might think less of me for still being into pokemon, but they will definetely know what is a Voltorb.

The second gen is also fairly popular, and than the legendaries, at least the main ones, and all starters. Than you have smogon OU, can they really cut anything there without making their most hardcore players rage?

On the other hand, new pokemons need to have their space, as they are part of what makes a new region feel different.

To be quite honest 500 models is still way more than most games would have to work with I think. I think this was going to happen sooner or later, but it would be naive from them to not expect some backlash. Let's see how they handle it.

Am I missing or not understanding something but I thought we all knew that?!?!

Ganefreak cant just make all pokemons in that graphic for a short amount of time.

That's the thing though - they aren't making any new models or animations so there's very little work to actually be done. All older Pokemon are the exact same as they were back in XY in 2013. No changes whatsoever. In S/M, they all even had walking models/animations for the overworld, just never got used. There are very no new assets to be created for older mon, cutting them makes absolutely no sense.

Now an interview straight from Game Freak's Masayuki Onoue, a programmer/director of Giga Wrecker Alt - stating that Pokemon isn't even GF's first priority at the moment.

If they aren't prioritising the biggest selling media franchise in the world, why are they allowed to continue working on it? Nintendo seriously needs to consider just buying out GF's 33% of Pokemon and have someone else develop the games at this point. Seriously, fucking why?

Management in Japan is a pretty big issue from what I see working here (I work in improvement, including management improvement).

They are in a weird position, some of the companies still managing like 50 years ago which is terrible and inefficient (and sometimes deadly for the employees), but on the other side some companies try to be younger and more international, and end up doing way too much and losing all logic and structure, losing their goal and priority in the process.

My current company, for exemple, got so excited about "3D printing" and "laser manufacturing" to be pioneers in Japan, that they invested a fortune in currently useless very expensive machines for R&D, while they completely "forgot" to keep money to buy spare parts or machines on the critical and fragile machine our entire production depends on. We obviously have only one machine like this, and the entire production stops anytime we have an issue with it. Great management, right ?

Their usual excuse is that "no-one in the company has management training or experience", and it seems pretty usual because foreign friends in other companies tell me the same thing. It's entirely possible that the GF management is just completely incompetent and got lost in their "let's innovate with new titles" stuff.

Pokemon is the biggest franchise in the world. It generates more money than some small countries, and I'm not going to give them a pass I would give a small indie studio. It's not the 90s anymore, if they wanted to they could make a Pokemon game as GTA V, but they'd rather give and take features every gen, and now it seems that it will happen to the pokemon themselves as well.

And if it was just a matter of time, why not just wait an extra year, or focus on Sword/Shield instead of Let's Go? Why make US/UM immediately after Sun/Moon? Even recycling content from those games, that had to be time consuming.

"the designers had to balance importing as many Pokémon as possible and updating them to these high standards while still keeping development deadlines. The team discussed many options, but finally decided to only allow Galar region Pokémon to be imported."

Translation: We didn't want to because money.

I've heard and experienced things like this many times during my time here in Japan too. I was working with management at an NGO and they wanted to spread a story, so they made an animation (one of the most terrible I've ever seen) and spent 200,000+ yen recording it professionally, but forgot to check the script before doing so, and ended up leaving a bunch of mistakes in, so they threw away all that money for nothing (and that's a fuckload for a non-profit). Friends at Rakuten have told me how poor management there is too. Seriously, leadership over here seems to just be awful no matter where you go. As you say, Game Freak is obviously no different, sadly.

Having read through a bunch of the actual Japanese, it's looking even worse than I thought.

Straight from Masuda. There will never be a Pokemon game that contains all of them again, ever.

He said -
"。。。今作から対応方針を変えることにしました。冒険の舞台に合わせて、拘って登場するポケモンを決めている。"

From this game forward, our policy has changed. Pokemon will be specifically chosen to match the setting of the adventure.

Don't expect any game to ever have 'em all again. Even if there's a DPPT remake, it will only have a limited selection of Pokemon, separate to SS, and they will not be compatible.
