Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Zelda Maker: A Brainstorming Thread

One of the things that almost always comes up when we discuss Mario Maker is the desire for this concept to come to the Zelda series.  Obviously these games couldn't be more different, but I can relate with the sentiment.

But how would this work?  What styles would be used?  Would it be engaging?  I have a few ideas of my own I'd like to share, but I'd rather hear from the forum instead to get some diversity of opinions.

For the sake of simplicity I will be encouraging this discussion to only consider 2D top down or 2D side scrolling Zelda elements.

So what do you guys think?  Is this something you'd want to see or play?  And how should Nintendo go about making it?

For a 2D Zelda Maker, wouldn't it be just something akin to RPG Maker, but with Zelda?

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Simplistically, yes.  But in that way Mario Maker is no different than the platform game maker engines that have existed forever.  There's something specific about tying it to a series that gives it a certain charm, and restricts the palette.  It's that restriction that makes these games compelling since it is easier to get started and utilizing those limited tools in imaginative ways is part of the fun.  I enjoyed my time with RPG Maker, but there is no soul in that game.  It just wasn't that fun.

I'd like a Metroid Maker more, that'd be sick. But I can't see either happening, these are expansive games that rely on expansive levels and interconnected areas, I just can't see Nintendo doing it. It's easy with Mario because the series is based around short, standalone levels.

I'm with you on wanting a Metroid Maker, but I absolutely agree with your argument against it.  A Metrodvania is a well crafted world and a simple tool set wouldn't allow for the kind of nuance that would be required.

I'll go ahead and share my vision for howI think a Zelda Maker would work.

Imagine the original Legend of Zelda.  The map would remain the same.  This map could be rendered in the NES, GB, SNES, Phantom Hourglass, and New Link's Awakening styles.  It would be up to the user to decide where to put each dungeon.  They could be placed in random bushes, under boulders, or by walking into a fake fairy fountain, for example.

Each user could create individual dungeons for finding key weapons and tools in the game.  These would be randomized into the locations on the main map, or you could create all of the dungeons yourself, or you could have a group of designers make them.

I'm not saying this is a perfect idea and that it isn't a little wonky, but it could be a lot of fun.  Making sure that there aren't dead ends in the game design would be very key, but I think each dungeon would have to be able to be beaten by the user, and the entire overworld map would have to go through the same checks and balances, perhaps with just a simple AI test.

More than a Zelda or a Metorid maker, Mario Maker could integrate some Art Academy features and some sprite/objects from other Nintendo IPs and evolve into a more general purpose 2d game maker. I also think Nintendo should release a PC version of it.
But I don't think Nintendo would ever actually do any of that.

Why would anyone want this?

Dont you guys care about level design? puzzles? story?
Zelda isnt 2D Super Mario. Leave that stuff to the Pro's.

This sounds like it ll be a mess at most.

Metroid Maker sounds alot more reasonable than a Zelda one, as Freebs2 mentioned above.
That "could" potentially work out.... I guess.

I just dont see this working with zelda though.

Metroid is one big interconnected world. It has no ‘levels’. You’d basically be making an entire game. I don’t see how a Metroid Maker can feasibly work. Zelda’s dungeons at least could be considered the game’s levels, I think a dungeon maker could work, but then what is Zelda without it’s overworld.

Sounds like wishful thinking.

Adventure Maker by Dream Mix was actually called Zelda Maker originally.

It looks pretty cool.

I love Mario Maker and I would also love Zelda Maker :)
I think it's possible to be released sometimes, but I believe it would be reduced to build only dungeons. But that would also be fine with me.
