It features a hand crank, which is an analog stick that you can turn to interact with games designed specifically for the Playdate. Yes, it's own games, there is an SDK and simulator for prospective developers.

The device will be sold for $149 purchase price will include 12 games, with one game delivered each week. They say they have "recruited some of the world’s best game designers — some well known; others under the radar — to make games exclusively for our system".

What? Interesting idea. But a hefty price for an experiment.

I am sure creative game developers loved trying the new experience for once.

A hand crank eh? People are gonna drop it while cranking. It's 5:23 AM.

I was expecting a NSFW thread. Was disappointed.

Looks uncomfortable to hold. So does 2DS but that actually has some form factor. This looks like it was built for robots.

I like to crank it in bed.  Does it come with its own screen protector or is that separate?  Also need a cover for buttons to prevent sticky buttons.  Something like the Wiimote condom.

It's the cranking on the street, in the library, and at the playground that I think will cause the most trouble.

Missed this info when I posted the thread.

First of the games announced was Crankin's Time Travel Adventure, a game created by Keita Takahashi,
best known as the designer of Katamari Damacy.

Other designers include Zach Gage (Ridiculous Fishing), Bennett Foddy (VVVVVV, Ape Out) and Shaun Inman (The Last Rocket).

I'm even picking up some sexual innuendo from the game description on their main page....

"What are these games? Here’s the thing: we’d like to keep them a secret until they appear on your Playdate. We want to surprise you.

Some are short, some long, some are experimental, some traditional. All are fun."

Nice idea and design but wont buy for that price.
