Gaming has been niche for decades we just see it as big because it's our hobby and the industry generates a lot of money for its size, 120m or so gamers out of 7 billion people the industry is mainly carried by a handful of countries in 3 regions so he's not wrong.

The thing is he didn't compare it to the worlds population and anyway it's silly to use our 7 billion population since just about everything is marginal when that's your comparison point, plus niche is a specialist segment of a mainstream enterprise and where did you pull that 120m from?.

Its niche because sales outside exclusive boxes are much bigger than 200m consoles sold.

its niche because a market like that for smartphone games dwarfs the console market.

dont forget this is part of an investors meeting: revenue gains is key in the discussion.

Kinda surprising when PS4 really helped Sony in a tough earnings time. I laugh at the notion of game streaming on anything other than a mobile device. When almost all entertainment is streaming and you live with others, even streaming on a local network is trash from device to device. But whatever, I have a nice backlog to last years and if that is my only option is to stream then to the localized backlog will be fallback and fuck the industry.

Compared to television, electronics manufacturing and some other industries it's niche.

All consoles combined get about 200M sales on 7B population.

Mr Puggsly: "Hehe, I said good profit. You said big profit. Frankly, not losing money is what I meant by good. Don't get hung up on semantics"

If PC gaming is for the master race and console gaming for peons then mobile gaming are for slaves.

He says they're niche, despite the obvious runaway success of the PlayStation 4.

Idiot. -_-

Some days I just blow up.

Assuming that every console sold last gen sold to a different human and no one person owned more than 1 console we would have 300m different people on consoles. With 7+b people in the world that means about 4% of people play video games on consoles. Now, knowing that some people buy every console each gen and such that percentage goes down.

Yes, in the grand scheme console gaming is niche. Is what it is.

Everything is marginal compared to it but we get a better idea of where industries stand when using it, console gaming as industry is dwarfed by other industries when everything is compared to it as other industries touch a much larger percent regardless so yes that makes it niche, that 120m is an estimated average of total platforms moved per gen while factoring overlap of userbases the actual number is likely smaller when all factors are taken into account and looked in to.
