Forums - Gaming Discussion - 3D games of the 90s that have aged the best

Everybody needs to be careful about posting screen shots. The majority you find online today are from emulators and do not represent the original title's resolution and AA. Keep in mind that image capture back then was not as simple as it is today and even official screen shots were sometimes compressed.

True, though by the same token games of this era were designed for CRT SDTVs and looked much better on those than they do on a modern TV or monitor.

Too many non 3D games, I suggest a banning spree!

Deus Ex (2000) - a game that pushes the boundaries of what the video game medium is capable of to a degree unmatched to this very day.

Here's some footage from Panzer Dragoon Saga for people who haven't seen it before.

Beautiful game.

It's kinda too bad so many Dreamcast games are disqualified....

Super Mario 64, F-Zero 64, ISS 64 ( the Konami Soccer game ), Einhander ( PS1 ), Tekken 3 ( PS1 ).....Those are few I can think of. PS1 and Saturn 3D games dind't age particularly well. Not that N64 was THAT much better. But it's 3D best aged better that the best from Sony and Sega. IMO.

The ONLY major N64 game that's not aged exceptionally well, IMO, is Goldeneye 007.

I've tried to tweak it to play with modern control schemes and it just doesn't work out.

Jet Force Gemini too. Amazing game, controls are pretty bad. I played it for the first time in 2005 and it was hard to get through even then.

I actually think controls and the camera are bigger issues than graphics when it comes to how well 3D games of the 5th gen have aged.

Like a game can look like it's made of compressed jpeg origami and I can still play it, but when its a struggle just to move around, then it becomes very hard to enjoy.

Beautiful game.

Pds looks horrendous and plays even worse , I give it the MOAT award = most overrated of all time, but admiting it will devalue your pricey game, so I guess all pds owners are smart.

but I love old Sega, skies of Arcadia, ps4 and shining force 2 and 3 are among my favorite jrpgs.

If it is true 3-D I won't mention the FF series since those used pre rendered back grounds for the most part. Here it goes:

1. Mario 64- The first game that got 3-D right, has also aged incredibly well. Odyssey is the news platforming king and it plays mostly by the same rules Mario 64 established more than two decades ago. The colorful blocky graphics are passable still.

2.Ocarina of Time- Perhaps the first 3-D action RPG with a functional but largely scripted open world (I know it was segmented but in 1998 it was as open as anything you ever played on console) the fact is that until BotW Zelda has pretty much played by the rules established in OoT. The game is still fun to play today and apart from Twilight Princess feels like the most complete 3-D Zelda experience.

3.Majora's Mask- might have actually aged better than OoT because of its Unique time travel mechanic. Played the 3DS version recently and I can safely say that it is still a ton of fun.

4.Star Fox 64- it remains the benchmark of the series and plays and looks fantastic to this day. Remembering all of these titles really sinks in Nintendo's and mostly Miyamoto's genius.

5.Tekken 3- it remains a fun accessible fighter, some would argue that the series never got much better than that entry.

6. Xenogears- it's inclusion is troubling I know as the characters are sprites....and yet everything else in rendered in 3-D and the game remains a gem.

7.Banjo/DK- As Mario 64 clones that look better they have aged well.
