It's not my cup of tea either, but people love Mario. As such, the chance for people to create their own challenges and stages in a world that they love is a desirable prospect. It's not that it's "easier" for Nintendo; they had to work hard to reach this point by carefully cultivating the IP and making sure its mainline entries were mostly of an impeccable caliber, to the extent that people now associate the IP with sheer joy.
