Forums - Gaming Discussion - Kotaku: Treyarch taking over Call of Duty 2020 development and making Black Ops 5.

"Next year’s Call of Duty has gone through a major upheaval, as publisher Activision informed developers this week that studios Raven and Sledgehammer, which had until now led the project, will no longer be in charge. Instead, according to three people familiar with goings-on at the companies, Treyarch will lead development on a new Black Ops for 2020."
"According to those briefed on the overhaul, Treyarch will take creative leadership on this new Black Ops while Raven and Sledgehammer will serve as support studios for the game, transforming the work they’ve done on their own single-player story mode into a campaign for Black Ops 5, which will also be set during the Cold War. (This may be a welcome return for fans, who criticized the lack of campaign in Black Ops 4.) It will likely be a cross-gen game, to coincide with the launch of the next PlayStation and Xbox, which are also expected in the fall of 2020."

I'm pretty torn by this decision. One one hand Treyarch is the best CoD studio and i'm glad the next game will have a cold war campaign but I'm also worried that two years might not be enough.

Ugh, what awful news. I dislike the Black Ops series, and rushing Black Ops 5 out with only 2 years of development will make it particularly meh. Was really hoping for another WW2 CoD from Sledgehammer in 2020. This sucks. Well, at least we have Modern Warfare 4 coming this year, Modern Warfare is my favorite CoD sub-IP. I have high hopes for it, several original Modern Warfare devs left Respawn after Titanfall 2 and came back to Infinity Ward to work on MW4 according to leakers.

CoD WW2 got boring quickly for most of the community. I'm glad they were going with the Cold War. A Cold War Blakc Ops 5 would make me happy. But like you mentioned the 2 years dev cycle worries me.

WW2 would have been more successful multiplayer wise if they had emulated WaW imo, and I was hoping they would emulate WaW for their next game. Their WW2 campaign was great though. Cold War isn't a bad setting choice though, and I'm glad that the campaign they were working on will be kept mostly intact and released next year, so I will at least rent Black Ops 5 for this Sledgehammer campaign.

Hopefully the Korean War factors into the campaign somehow. We have never had a Korean War game to my knowledge, certainly not a AAA one
