Forums - Sales Discussion - Switch overtakes total PS4 sales in Japan, in less than half the time

Considering it was released when its competitors were already 4 to 5 years old, unlike PS4 and xbox one with almost the same release time, it is indeed an achievement.

It is despite your sarcasm. Switch launched in the same year during which the PS4 peaked. The PS4 was at its strongest, but Nintendo had no problems to sell their own console. So why do you consider the PS5 a threat to Switch?

Because I think switch itself is overrated, any new challenger in this industry can be a threat to it.

You can think the games and the system is overrated, but how is it possible to think sales are overrated? They are fact

I do think the system is overrated, but not the games, on the contrary I can say I enjoyed some first party games on the system, and I never said the sale is overrated, but as you mentioned, the sale is a fact, so u can understand what I mean is actually because I think switch is overrated, so the system doesn't deserve the sale, which was also contributed mostly by Japanese market. I admit switch is a successful system with good games pushing its sale, but the console itself isn't good enough to me, so much compromise done on the system limited the potential of it, I looked forward to switch from the day it was announced, but was then just disappointed by the what I really got.

That's factually untrue; Japan does not make up the majority of Switch sales, in fact it doesn't even account for a quarter of global Switch sales.

You have every right to think it is overrated, but clearly the market does not agree as it is one of the fastest selling systems in history.

It makes no sense to claim that because you personally think it's overrated, any newcomer is a threat to it. Sales trends show that Playstation and Switch sales don't directly eat into each other.

Switch is on track to more than triple Vita sales in Japan. Vita is also portable. So why is the Switch selling so much more than the Vita when they are both portable?

Because the Switch is a better one with better games.  Japan loves its portables but a bad portable with not enough good games ain't gonna sell as well.

Exactly; being a portable does help, but this one factor alone is not enough secure a win, you still need a strong library of appealing software, which Switch has.

That's all my opinion, take it or not, it's all up to you, I never say I can represent the market, I made the statements personally, and concluded what I personally thought about, I never say it's coming 100%, but maybe your right, history told that Japan is Nintendo land, nothing can come even close to Nintendo there, not to mention any threat.

It just doesn't seem likely to me that a newcomer, even PS5, will stall the Switch when they occupy different niches. Switch's success hasn't damaged PS4's sales, and PS4's success hasn't stopped the Switch selling great. People buy them for different reasons, and since PS5 is unlikely to be a hybrid and won't have Nintendo's first party games it won't provide the things people buy a Switch for and therefore won't stop it selling.

Things gonna be tough for Nintendo when the market there for switch comes to a saturation point especially considering PS5 is on the horizon, very interested in how Nintendo will do then, forcing a new generation console again with meh power making it hybrid to guarantee their "success" in home with poor unnecessary third party support? If it is it, I call it dumb. As always, I'd rather play on a real home console without compromise on power.

Considering how poorly Sony's last three consoles (PS3, Vita, PS4) have started in Japan and that there's no indication that Sony will change their strategy for Japan, it won't be tough for Nintendo at all.

Yep! And considering more and more Japanese devs are putting their games on the Switch + the whole censorship issues with Sony. Nintendo is looking good in Japan.

Pocky Lover Boy!

Yea, I do not really see how the PS5 will immediately impact the Switch. Like previous generations, the PS5 will not immediately get nothing but big games off the bat. It will take some time before developers eventually get a hang of what the system has in store. The PS4 has enjoyed the last few years of great exclusives and third party content, which it did not necessarily had in the beginning. It would be tough to argue that early games on PS4, like Assassin's Creed Unity, The Order: 1886, Killzone: Shadow Fall, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Watch Dogs, and Evolve, are comparable to recent games like Horizon: Zero Dawn, Persona 5, Sekiro, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Resident Evil 7, God of War, Spiderman, and Monster Hunter World in not just performance, but also in critical success as well.

And as you said, consumers buy consoles for different reasons. The Switch has more than enough reasons to entice a purchase for a consumer. Whether it be home console on the go, incredible current and upcoming games from Nintendo and Co., the ability to play local co-op with the Joy Cons, and maybe knowing that your friends and family are just as interested in the Switch as you are.

I should hope so, seeing Japan has pretty much always been a gaming on the go, country

I think the last two years have proven there is room for both Switch and Playstation to thrive in coexistence.

PS5 is almost certain to inherit the same niche as the PS4, so it won't endanger the Switch any more than a new species of lion arriving on the savanna would endanger the vultures.
