Very curious to see how PS5 performs in Japan. How well did PS3 do in Japan?

edit: Checked the PS3-numbers and PS4 isn't as far behind as i thought it was

I don’t know if we should give the portability too much credit. It’s a factor sure, but considering the Switch is $300 and most of the retail games (especially the first party titles that have maintained strong legs) are selling at $50-60. Those were not usual prices for the 3DS and Vita hardware and their respective games, unless I’m missing something. So yes, portability plays a factor, but you’re still paying closer to a home console. Not to mention the various accessories that do not necessarily scream portable.

PS5 will not do well in Japan... Every since Sony moved their Playstation headquarter to California they have been losing a ton of support of Japanese developers their censorship policies and requiring japanese devs to communicate in english on California's time table are just horrid at this point I think Xbox is going to do better in Japan than PS5 unless Sony cleans house.

With the success of DMC V, MHW, KH3, RE2R, the Dark Souls/related series, etc. on PS4, I doubt the third party support will dwindle.

what I hope for the Switch is that more developers start creating more non-ports. The testing and BS are no longer an excuse to create just ports. The Switch is a success so get going with new games.

Portable is the biggest factor so i see nothing wrong with people saying japan is portable crazy. Vita sold over 6 million without any 1st party and 3rd party AAA games because it is portable

Switch is on track to more than triple Vita sales in Japan. Vita is also portable. So why is the Switch selling so much more than the Vita when they are both portable?

Because the Switch is a better one with better games.  Japan loves its portables but a bad portable with not enough good games ain't gonna sell as well.

Guys, let’s try to reduce ‘it’s only because’ and actually consider a well placed product that hit at a crucial time. I’m not saying opposing opinions shouldn’t matter, only that you should avoid hit-and-run posts that don’t invite real discussion.

I didn't intend for my comment to be read like that.  I think it's pretty undeniable that when it comes to portable platforms sales are higher than one would expect in a different country.  That is not the only factor in Switch sales in Japan of course.  The whole point of the Switch is that it's suppose to cover both bases and does so with games that people want.

I wasn't even trying to have an apposing opinion.  Just an off the cuff reminder that Japan indeed loves portable gaming.

Things gonna be tough for Nintendo when the market there for switch comes to a saturation point especially considering PS5 is on the horizon, very interested in how Nintendo will do then, forcing a new generation console again with meh power making it hybrid to guarantee their "success" in home with poor unnecessary third party support? If it is it, I call it dumb. As always, I'd rather play on a real home console without compromise on power.

Considering how poorly Sony's last three consoles (PS3, Vita, PS4) have started in Japan and that there's no indication that Sony will change their strategy for Japan, it won't be tough for Nintendo at all.

sure, not in Japan, but Japan probably is not the whole world, right?

Switch is doing well worldwide. Launch-aligned, it's outpacing the PS4 through 24 months on the market.

Considering it was released when its competitors were already 4 to 5 years old, unlike PS4 and xbox one with almost the same release time, it is indeed an achievement.
