Forums - Gaming Discussion - Tournaments

In the glorious times of the WiiU, there was a little thing named Miiverse. I happened to like it a lot, for various reasons.

One thing was, that I joined a group of people around the Zen Pinball 2 community, that made regularly tournament for this game. The leader of the pack picked a table and for one week we all tried our best to make an extraordinary high score. In many cases I had a good score and thought I can't top it, but with the additional excitement about the tournament I got new personal bests - and so did others.

The threads were filled with screenshots to proudly present a new score, some drawings members made around it and playful banter. At the end of the week the participants were ranked and the leaderboard updated to include the new tournament.

The community sometimes extended to other games like Mario Kart or Smash, but mostly focused on Zen Pinball. And it was a blast.

These days Nintendo thinks we shouldn't be able to communicate with our friendlist, so this does not work anymore.

But maybe... maybe... we could do something similar here on VGC. There could be a thread for each event, in which people post their results and talk about it. And a central thread that points to the current event and keeps a global leaderboard. It obviously don't need to be restricted to Zen Pinball, and it doesn't need to be restricted to a Nintendo platform.

So, what do you think? Would you be into this? And if yes, which games you wanna play?

Isn't the Nintendo General used for that already? The problem is getting pwople interested and/or available to play the tournaments. Life gets in the way more than Nintendo sometimes...

You know it deserves the GOTY.

That's why Pinball was so perfect for this. Everyone had the chance to try at the score in the course of the week. Nobody had to be active at the same moment.

My XBL friends and I used to organize competitions for 80's arcade games. We kept track of everything in a blog, and verified everything via the games actually leaderboards. It was fun. I won every round. lol. My skills have eroded, and there's lots of young talent here, but I'm ok with having my ass handed to me. Circle of life and all that. :) I'm legit interested, but not sure how we'd go about it. I'd suggest some more third party, arcade-type games. That way it wouldn't be restricted to a single community.

Yeah, that's what I have in mind. As I said, it is more difficult, if people have to be online at the same time (like with Smash). But games with highscores, where everyones scores for himself but the scores can be compared, should work. This includes Pinball, racers, shootemups, even something like Tetris should work.

I also want to include people from different platforms if possible,

That's a good idea!

I miss miiverse, though...

I miss MiiVerse as well. I ended on a high-note though. While playing through and finishing up on both Breath of the Wild (Wii U) and Samus Returns (3DS). Plus, got the full download of my posts and screenshots to keep.

MiiTomo was just okay, good gimmicky while it lasted.
