Doesn't make much sense, as GRR could have released book 6 by the time that season ended and book 7 in 2020... no reason to hold both.

Writers of the show probably didn't want to have any attention taken away from the show.

Makes no sense, this would bring more publicity than take viewers.

Just like making a lot of merchandise, books, games, etc to Blockbuster movies are all viewed positively.

Including there are several game of thrones gaming released.

Outside of a few bits here and there, I have never watched the show. From what I've heard though, especially the last few weeks, the show has become in the eyes of some fans, anywhere from "just bad" to "total abomination", and this has been happening to some degree since the show ran out off book material to draw upon. As for a reaction, that this kind of agreement would be struck makes sense. Both from a logistical and $$$ standpoint.

Well they didnt run out of book material though, they deliberately branched off after book 3. If I recall, at one point GRRM stated that he thought it would take 3 seasons to cover books 4+5 but they managed to streamline them both into a single season and that was when things really went downhill.

Roger-roger. Although I know I've heard about "running out of book material" over the years. It seems to be an idea floating around. Even expressed by others in this thread. I'll take your word for it though, since you are undoubtedly more knowledgeable on the topic.

The show isnt bad because they lacked source material its bad because it tries to much in to little time

What is the difference? Had they the material to film the void there'd be no issue. I don't think HBO wanted to force this, they even made a 2 year gap. Is this failt at the writers or the actors holding shit up? Is it with George? ...we need answers man.

The difference is that they started cramming too much in too little time way before they ran out of source material.

Book 1, 694 pages=season 1

Book 2, 761 pages=season 2

Book 3, 973 pages=season 3+4

Book 4+5, 1769 pages=season 5

Every plotline from books 4 & 5 were either cut, condensed or combined so what he said is correct, it wasnt a lack of source material but trying to fit too much in too short of time that caused the drop in quality.

didn't know that. why the rush? Why didn't they keep the series for 10 years.

Not sure, my guess is because they thought that they were boring? They focus more on world building and character development so the plot doesnt progress as fast and they introduce a bunch of new characters while setting up big events for the last 2 books.

If this is true they would’ve still had material to go on. Unless the unpublished books are as illogical as the last few episodes of the series has sadly become.

A fair point, but the showriters said that they had known about a very important plot point that occurred in Episode 3, for the past 3 years now.
That means Dan & David had decided on the ending, or at least parts of the ending, 3 years ago. Now this may very well be based on what GRRM told them would happen in the books, and on what he had written at the time.

In the 3 years that have passed since then, it's not impossible to imagine that he managed to finish the books. And that the show writers had already decided on the course their story would take, regardless of what GRRM wrote during that time.

As writers, you want to show that you're capable of writing your own story as well, and not just adapt someone else's work. But they probably did not anticipate just how negatively some of their own later storylines would be received.

Though I don't think we'll ever know the truth about this, unless Goerge states it officially, or the two books are released swiftly after the show ends.
I'm also hearing now that HBO supposedly wanted to give them the budget to make more episodes, which makes sense because Game of Thrones is a big cash cow for them. But Dan & David apparently just wanted to wrap things up in a few episodes.

With some more episodes, or an extra season, the whole Daenerys debacle that occurred could have been developed much better, and made sense. Among other things.

Keep in mind, one of these writers are responsible for X-Men Origins: Wolverine. And they're now moving on to work on Star Wars...

I agree. I guess there could be more of the books completed now than two or three years ago. I wrote my post before seeing yesterday’s/today’s episode, which I have now seen and thought was actually a step up again. I’d expect the main thing that happens in this episode to also happen in the upcoming books, I do believe GRRM had already layed out plot points that huge.

And indeed, this season, and probably the previous as well should’ve been a full 10 episodes.

Wai......Are these clowns the ones doing the new Star Wars? Oh my. Well, at least that's already ruined. Most of their work is already done for them.

This is good news in my opinion.

Not only does mean we'll get the books sooner, it means that the ending is even more likely to be quite different.

Do you imagine the books being like the last few seasons? I certainly don't.

I still like the show. It's just obvious that the story telling has declined in quality while everything else has increased in production quality.

I'm loving the show right now so this doesn't really affect me. Having that said, if true, it seems rather shady.
