Forums - Movies Discussion - UPDATED: G.R.R. Martin denies rumor he already finished the books but made deal with showrunners not to publish until end of show

What is your reaction to the possibility this is true?

I don't care. 15 55.56%

This pisses me off! 6 22.22%

It is understandable. 6 22.22%

Total:27

I watched the first season or two, and then read the books.
I would have loved to read the last book, like a year or more ago.

however I can understand the author, chooseing to take a paycheck from HBO to shelf the books.
Even if it cost his potential sales in books (probably alot), a sure thing (check from HBO) is hard to resist.

Its easy to be pissed off at the guy, but many of us, if we where authors would probably act the same way.

I believe this rumor btw.

I'm gonna say this scenario is unlikely. But if true, any shred of what little integrity Martin had left is out the window.

Money talks.... and all that.

Would you have done differntly if it was you as a author?

I'm not an author or an artist of any kind, so I can't answer that question.  I'd like to think I'd stick to my guns, though.  But who knows?

And it's not like Martin wasn't already rich from his very successful writing and editing career up to this point, so he wasn't some starving author who really needed the money.

But that proves my point.  If he held them back because HBO threw a big bag of money at him, his integrity as an artist is nil.

I clicked "Pissed off" at first in the poll but thinking about it, if it means I finally get to read Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring in the near future then I'm all for it. The wait has been ridiculously long.

Doesn't make much sense, as GRR could have released book 6 by the time that season ended and book 7 in 2020... no reason to hold both.

Writers of the show probably didn't want to have any attention taken away from the show.

Makes no sense, this would bring more publicity than take viewers.

Just like making a lot of merchandise, books, games, etc to Blockbuster movies are all viewed positively.

Including there are several game of thrones gaming released.

Outside of a few bits here and there, I have never watched the show. From what I've heard though, especially the last few weeks, the show has become in the eyes of some fans, anywhere from "just bad" to "total abomination", and this has been happening to some degree since the show ran out off book material to draw upon. As for a reaction, that this kind of agreement would be struck makes sense. Both from a logistical and $$$ standpoint.

Well they didnt run out of book material though, they deliberately branched off after book 3. If I recall, at one point GRRM stated that he thought it would take 3 seasons to cover books 4+5 but they managed to streamline them both into a single season and that was when things really went downhill.

Roger-roger. Although I know I've heard about "running out of book material" over the years. It seems to be an idea floating around. Even expressed by others in this thread. I'll take your word for it though, since you are undoubtedly more knowledgeable on the topic.

@bold, considering that character doesnt even exist in the books than it's fair to say they are making their own story.

Yeah, although such a character may be planned for future books, or at least something that represents the key to that threat.

Either way, yeah there are clearly things in the TV show that Dan & Dave have written themselves, such as Talisa Stark, who wasn't in the books either.

The show isnt bad because they lacked source material its bad because it tries to much in to little time

What is the difference? Had they the material to film the void there'd be no issue. I don't think HBO wanted to force this, they even made a 2 year gap. Is this failt at the writers or the actors holding shit up? Is it with George? ...we need answers man.

The difference is that they started cramming too much in too little time way before they ran out of source material.

Book 1, 694 pages=season 1

Book 2, 761 pages=season 2

Book 3, 973 pages=season 3+4

Book 4+5, 1769 pages=season 5

Every plotline from books 4 & 5 were either cut, condensed or combined so what he said is correct, it wasnt a lack of source material but trying to fit too much in too short of time that caused the drop in quality.
