Forums - Movies & TV - Pokemon Detective Pikachu Highest Opening for Videogame Movie

Tagged games:

So this weekend brought the U.S. opening of Pokemon Detective Pikachu. While the film did not debut in the number one position because of the continued dominance of Avengers: Endgame ($63 million weekend/ $723 million total), Pikachu's number two opening at $58 million is good enough to take the number one record opening for all movies based on videogames. The previous record was held by 2001's Lara Croft Tomb Raider ($47.7 million, not adjusted for inflation). It is very likely that Pokemon Detective Pikachu will end up outgrossing Tomb Raider's $131 million total (again not adjusted) to claim the crown for top videogame movie adaption.

So far Detective Pikachu has grossed $112.4 million internationally for a $170 million gross worldwide. Pikachu's 52 rating on Metacritic and certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes makes it the best reviewed videogame movie as well but of course the competition is really low.

So what do you think? Did you see the movie? Did you like it? Are these numbers good, bad, not what you expected? Pika, Pika?

I wonder how the guy who proposed the wacky spinoff felt a) when it was approved and b) became the basis for the first live action Pokemon movie. I hope he got a raise!

Glad the videogame to movies curse is gone .Not sure about Sonic ?

Eh, the metascore is still only 52. One slightly less awful movie doesn't mean things are going to change.

Kinda surprised that the highest gross for video game based movie doesn't belong to Resident Evil tbh.

I would have been very much surprised if this one didn't turn out to be successful. The Pokemon name alone is enough to attract a large number of people, and when the trailer had such a positive response from outside the franchise's normal demographic it was bound to do very well.

112 million in foreign markets, for a worldwide total of 170 million

Congrats to Detective Pikachu! I don't know if I'll watch it, but it looks interesting.

He sounds too much like Deadpool.
