Forums - Website Topics - The state of this forum

Part of the reason for this site's success was the brilliant performance of the Wii and DS. People kept wanting to see the results. They wanted to see and discuss projections. Then it kind of eroded from there. One shift I've noticed is a lot of the gaming fanboys have become political fanboys. I don't recall this being a thing with the site in the past. Maybe there's been too much of a shift since all that gamergate BS?

Perhaps the editors of the site can, instead of reporting that "Michael Pachter said blah blah blah" they can come up with articles like "Michael Pachter is deluded and wrong, here's what factors he's missing, this is what the data actually shows."

But you guys in the site department have the metadata on what sort of articles are successful, right? The data on which articles attract a steady viewership of certain user profiles?

I made a thread about this recently and got no replies.

The team here are aware of this issue. We are waiting on the return of Talonman before we are able to proceed as none of us on the writing staff have the ability to do that.

Edit: While I can't speak for the rest of the time, what I would like to do is to have the Weekly Charts updated again with JUST the hardware figures. Maybe have more of a break down like I do with the weekly hardware articles to help make up for the lack of software. - http://www.vgchartz.com/article/441149/global-hardware-weekly-week-43-2019/

I like that suggestion, would be a great addition to the site.

I don't come around very much anymore because they stopped putting the top games sold anymore, just those stupid shipments that are worthless. I'd love to come by more often, but there's no reason to really.

Real shame because aye... it's like, the first link under the sites titular Charts tab at the top of the site.

Also see Kotaku has been getting a lot of user and staff uproar at the management because the site has autoplaying adverts with audio, seeing the staff from the site agree with the users that it's BS is kinda strange to see in comparison to the "well other sites use ads too" route which fell on almost all the complaints about how badly the adverts impact the user experience on here. For mobile data users having this site consume videos worth of data to try and post a simple message is completely unacceptable.

What ads?

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

I think most of the staff agree that the ads on VGChartz are trash, and I can't recall that ever being the response, our response has typically always been that we can't do anything about it which is true. We did send Ioi an email a couple or so weeks ago but have yet to get a reply, I'm using Adblock and try to avoid coming to the site on mobile now thanks to the auto-play/auto-sound adverts.

Luckily I'm a supporter, so am able to use the site in my phone.

That's the thing though.... I sub to stuff like Netflix as it's €15 a month for great content.... do you really think this site is so good that it can afford to annoy mobile users into asking an entry fee?

@Ryuu96 I have on at least 2 separate occasions been given a reply about the ads on here as being from the same pool as used on X and Y other websites, not addressing the fact that on here the site is/ (was more at the time) held together so poorly that certain adverts just straight up break/broke the formatting of the site layout and rendered this site , not site X and Y unusable. It would be like having a strobe light set up in a ward for photo-sensitive epileptic patients and then saying that the lights are fine because the disco across the street uses the same brand of light bulb.

Again though, my main point is the fact that this site I would rate as fair from a desktop point of view, poor/very poor from a mobile point of view and it certainly isn't a site which will grow by pointing users towards the paywall if they want to be able to browser here in any reasonable way, I mean even without the ads, the text entry on mobile is really just counter-intuitive, doing text entry on a forum shouldn't require a tutorial to be able to navigate to a "submit" button.

Another reason this site declines? Everybody talks, nobody acts. I'm no better on this measure, of course, as I have ideas for threads that could become ongoing things but never bother to do them, but I'm also crazy busy with work. There's a lot of cynicism and complaining going on in this thread, and demands that site admins fix certain things, but I said it before and I'll say it again, saving this site will take action, from as many of us as possible. People like mZuzek taking the time and devoting the effort to carry on traditions like the Greatest Games thread are what we need more of. If anyone here actually gives a shit about this site, don't knock the people taking real action like that. If you don't have time to put in that kind of effort, that's understandable, but at least do what you can to support the people that do.

Here is a tip for mobile. Download Firefox and then choose add on that shhhhh... Begins with U and ends with Origin.
