As a relatively new member myself, I have a totally not serious proposal: lift the ban on Gamemaster! Ha!

Were you reading some of his blogs and started feeling nostalgic?

It's too bad he flipped out so often, when he returned with an alt, he was much better. I don't think he threatened to visit violence upon any mods for example.

Anyways, his blogs will be missed.

Not true, the game was also ported to NES and MegaDrive. But yeah, much fun on PC too.

Well, I'm usually more a reader than a poster. I do like many posts here, disagree and agree with many but I end up not replying much.

I guess you think OTB is irrelevant then?

I don't, but... hmm, let's not go there. But I did think he had been around for longer. I never said there are no relevant users from this period, only that there are few, and if anything, it kinda shows here - with you and Bofferbrauer turning up, from late 2016/early 2017, and now OTBWY who is from mid 2017... and so far, no 2018 or 2019 users mentioned at all. It's easy to see that there's been a decline in new users.

I joined in 2016 but my activity flows with news. These days have been a bit boring.

Additionally, to the discussion of the mod/ban concerns (which from my viewpoint has been an ever-present thing here [NOTABLE to THE DISCUSSSION, so I deem the posts here valid, but think it is still a "secondary issue".]) I always wondered why, at the end of the day, Fanboy-ism was banned from the beginning/early days. I agree that it CAN thwart meaningful discussion at times; but that is honestly the reason we all wanted to engage in the first place. {This is why there are the NINTENDO, SONY, and Microsoft discussion Tabs/areas. At the end of the day we really just wanted to bash the "other side" (without a ban) and we used make a big production about who was changing sides and what-not. (I jumped from Nintendo to Xbox and now I went to the Dark Side) It's fun. We have these game opinions and our culture is to type-scream those opinions to others, especially the ones who don't wanna hear it. Ha ha ah.
The point is, I feel the whole mod/user war undercurrent was just a cat and mouse game because we had this rule of argue, but don't REALLY argue, that's not nice, and people wanted to get really clever about breaking the rule in indirect ways. The mods eventually had to come in and start banning people who really were abusive to the rules, and they would just come back later with new names and the beat went on...
It was a lot of fun though...
(thoughts?)

Yeah, I'm a little bit torn on the whole mod situation showing up here in this thread. We can dismiss them and pretend it's a non-issue all we want, but there has been a number of people coming here to express their distaste for the situation and ignoring that is ignoring a real thing that's going on. I can't speak for them, because I haven't been moderated in years (though a mod did approach me via PM recently), but I do sometimes feel almost... privileged. Like for some reason it doesn't really matter what I say, as long as I'm not being blatantly offensive I can get away with things other users don't seem to. Maybe that's just me, though.

I know the mods are likely to dismiss these concerns as just moaning from toxic members, and they may or may not be right, but I think there's a certain stubborness, maybe even arrogance, about the team at the moment. They're not really wrong to do what they do, after all the place does have rules. I've always been thankful to the work the mods put in on VGC, because it's what kept the place full of sensible and constructive people, but maybe now, with the reduced activity around and fewer new users, it could be the time to start reviewing those concepts and try to take a more lenient approach to moderations. It's clear that many members have been scared away by the nature of bans here, and funny enough, looking back at some of our oldest users still around, many of them haven't always had the most enviable behavior.

Maybe we could introduce new ways of moderation? Something that drives people to be more constructive and less toxic, without driving them away? For example, say instead of there being warnings and bans, there's something in between, like a half-ban or something, where the person isn't allowed to do certain actions for a while but can still come around and discuss the matters of their moderation or whatever.

I would have mentioned QuickRick, but he fell of a cliff already...

Also, how could you forget about Marth?

I didn't, I actually thought he'd been around longer. Like, much longer. Still early 2017, though. And no, quickrick doesn't count.

I disagreed with a few warnings I got. One of the the guy was rude and I replied as rude as he was. I got moderated, but not him. The last one I was banned because I called someone Nintendo warrior which is on the forbidden "fanboy vocabulary".

Anyway, I wouldn't say that mods here are bad, I don't think so, but at the same time after a few moderations the way I learned to avoid moderation is just to avoid posting when I disagree. Like I said, I don't post a lot, but I've been posting less as a result of my personal experience with moderation.

This is not a criticism, but this is what happened. To avoid moderation I avoid disagreeing. When I agree though, most times I don't have anything else to add.

Wouldn't be surprised if those intrusive video ads have something to do with it. I understand you need revenue, but damn.

I agree that it's a bit too much. Since I moved from Chrmoe to FF, it's fine. FF is good at getting rid of ads and privacy issues.

God bless You.

For any of you complaining about moderators, this is NOT the thread for it. If you want these concerns to be addressed, do yourselves a favor and post them in the official Moderator thread: http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=224251

Posting this kind of stuff here, will only serve to have your complaints likely missed and not discussed...

Yep - that's part of the problem too I suppose - given the topic of the post - moderation is a valid response and dismissing it as 'wrong place' is part of that same issue. 2 major issues for me - it's a PITA to log in here - I have to argue with my security settings because this login is not protected. I'm sure many people just give up at that point. The moderation - but no one wants to hear or care about it. I've never been moderated, but I don't post often - because the mods here pick sides - and it's easier to lurk and not deal with it.

Haha! I remember getting a kick out of his incoherent nonsense on 1Up. Poor guy, all he ever wanted to be was the Bruno Mars of the online gaming forums!

First off, I greatly, greatly appreciate the increased mod interaction (and the transparency). This site currently has one of the best moderation teams I've ever seen in a forum and it is much appreciated.

Secondly, the heyday of videogame forums has long since passed us by. I'm pretty sure there's something called discord these days (I have no idea what it is) but it seems a lot of people use that to chat, in addition to social media, youtube, twitter, etc.

Third, as many people have said, this site is very news dependent. Forums are usually full of people expressing opinions or "arguing" about their opinions. The fact is, we're in that pre-E3 info drought (like every year) and that has an overwhelmingly stifling effect on conversation. Even the Youtubers that talk about gaming news have been relatively quiet and have had to fish pretty deep for topics.

I predict in about three weeks we'll see a strong uptick in conversations as the E3 leaks begin. Until then I enjoy the relative calm of the forum and the lack of trolling behavior. The numbers are stale any way you look at them right now, with Sony handedly trouncing this generation, Switch doing well but too far from Microsoft to start throwing parties, and years away from potentially challenging Sony's stranglehold on this generation.

I do appreciate the folks here, as most of us do. This is the only forum I go to, period. I communicate more here than on my social media platforms and appreciate keeping tabs on the site as a good barometer of videogaming specifically and society generally. Sometimes that makes me happy, and sometimes that makes me depressed, but either way I appreciate the view.

Here is another question, for those who go to other gaming sites.

How do they fair compared to VGChartz?

I've been to other forums in the past, but I'm only posting here now.

I like the fact that this forum is one of the big ones but not really too crowed, like every thread getting 50 or 100 pages.

I also like the fact that we try to discuss industry, but here it doesn't look like posters are self-righteous-know-everything-about-industry like on some of those big forums out there.

A major issue is that we no longer get linked to by games journalists, because we no longer have much of the unique sales data that journalists used to refer to.

I came here the first time through a link from a Forbes.com writer that referred to this site often. But, it's been years since he mentioned this site at all. The same is true all over the place. With the current state of sales data here, which was what made this place unique, there aren't many opportunities for our content to be picked up by other outlets. So, we get few newcomers to replace the people that leave, and the site slowly declines.

I'd say that nobody has. It seems to me that the media now waits for the next financial results and that's good enough. The media doesn't care much about weekly sales.

Regardless, I think we need to find other ways to keep tracking of the industry that is not just raw sales numbers. I don't have the answers either, but raw sales numbers will be a thing of the past soon due to digital sales and streaming stuff. I had opened a thread about that.

CGI-Quality said:

Our site hasn't been mentioned as much for sales because we've had a harder time tracking them (and are the only site to attempt to do it in such a fashion — this is often overlooked).

Most of the main functional complaints I hear don't even scratch the surface of understanding to the work staff has put into the site (particularly Machina, Talon, Trucks, Trunks, hell, all of the Site Admins, the GDB Staff, and our Writers). They are constantly trying to figure out new ways to implement updated functions and/or re-write code.

I get the issues people have, but I also see what goes into the work here more than many. Site traffic reduction cannot be pinned down to any one thing. This is on top of the fact that we still have a pretty active scene. Other places, such as Gamersyde and Gamefaqs, have seen a far steeper decline in activity over the years.

Once the new consoles are set to launch, traffic will increase in a substantial way.

I agree. I don't see any major issue here. Personally, I feel that I'll post more as soon as PS5 comes out and I believe that's the case for many.

We need new industry stuff to discuss. New hardware specs, the ray tracing thing, how nsw will go on with the new consoles, a new nsw, pokemon sales will be super interesting to see, anyway. Lots of stuff that will be willing to discuss and talk about soon or next year.

Cant expect this place to be active when theres rarely ever worthwhile conversations to be had 🤷
Whenever I come back all I see is non gaming stuff or fanboy BS, shit when I find a thread that seems interesting it usually just ends up being filled with petty drama and arguing anyway
The website has an identity crisis, the place is dated but the conversation lends itself to the younger generation who have the time to waste with online video game drama.

Creating worthwhile threads is everyone's mission. You can help improve that if you open new good threads yourself. I'm not bashing you, that's true for myself too. I wish I had more ideas to open worthwhile conversations here. I don't contribute much either.

I think two more points should be noted: Competition and fatigue.Ill name people just for the sake of giving examples, I dont mean to fight or to provoke anyone.

Competition is pretty obvious.Discord have sucked alot of traffic from (probably) alot of forums, since it is more convenient for alot of people.

But I think that, at least for VGC, fatigue is the biggest problem of all.Not necessarily from the forum itself, but rather from its users. Its hard to explain, but I think that everyone who has been here at least two years or so understand the feeling its ideas being dismissed or disliked, of ideas that you are so passioned about and people brushing it off or being agressive.

And I mean, thats no one fault.I think we all here are passionate about a game or another, and about one or two topics. And the same will be true about the opossite, about people being completely oppossed about a stance or another. That on itself isnt a problem. Most of the users can take the hit and move on, or understands that its all a discussion and thats how things work. But then it happens one time. Then two. Then five. Then 10 times.By the time you noticed, you are either so used to the forum or so tired of your opinions being either treated as "garbage" or stupid, that you either lash out, or get tired of participating.

Just to give an example of this:I am certainly part of this trend, having recently discussed with Chazore on a similar level, when he made the topic about Epic buying Psyonix.I am one that dosent care that much about PC gaming(though I do play on PC) and favor more consoles, and Chazore is one that loves PC and(and thats my impression) cares little if nothing about consoles. So obviosly we didnt see eye to eye.But since I already had an history with him, here and on discord, I already started the discussion with my left foot. And while it was wrong, I will admit I enjoyed it.And I think thats one of the biggest problems of this forum.People, myself included, eventually takes things personally.I have been blocked off from Versus profile, I have been called a Nintendo fanboy worse than goodnightschroom(I think thats his name) by Pokoko(why, only god knows).

And that accumulates. And people stop discussing with you, with your threads. And you do the same. And thus the cycle continues.Thats why new users are so important, but they are not joining by the reasons people have already stated here.

I dont know, I dont think VGC is that bad in terms of engagement, but yeah we arent as active as Resetera. But I think thats also the reason why you feel as you do about this forum Zuzek, being so small that you know most users.

I've been to discord and I've got no clue how to have discussions on that. For me it's just a chat, not a discussion platform.

I feel the EXACT same way!! It's just too fast to have any meaningful discussions, unless you remain glued to the ongoing chat. The moment you step away and come back to "50+ New Messages", it's just not worth scrolling back and trying to digest everything that's been said while you were gone...

That is what i got from it when I googled it. Basically an IRC and skype got together and had a kid that is trying to look cool for a younger audience. I'll stick to IRC for my chat activities lol. Been on IRC for 23 years so why change lol.

You know what?. I too took a few things personally, but I know you on discord, and I know I was just heated up from all the news trying to make Epic sound like a good guy and Valve a bad one.

I'm sorry for our previous exchange though. I should have worded it better.
