Forums - Gaming Discussion - Epic buys out Psyonix devs, set to bar game from Steam

So I just caught wind of this news thanks to a friend over on Twitter, but was needless to say, completely flabbergasted that Epic would actually stoop this low, to actually buy a dev team, with zero disclosed reasons on the purchase or the amount listed, but to also bar their game Rocket League, from being further sold on Steam.

I'm aware of Valve buying Campo Santo, but afaik, Valve haven't specifically said "no you only make games for us and, no you can't release your future games on other storefronts". Since Epic asre now having Psyonix rip their game from Steam, what kind of precedent does this set for future games and devs on PC?. What's to stop EA from nabbing devs that sell on Steam/GoG/Uplay etc, buying them up and getting them to sell on their storefront only?.

I'm aware that Disney was stopped long ago from being able to buy up the movie industry way back when, but what's to stop Epic in the games industry from doing this over and over?.

This isn't consumer friendly, this is Epic trying to gut another competitor and consumers in the process. Again, this isn't "competition", all it is is complete and utter tripe.

I don’t see it as any different than Sony or MS or Nintendo buying a studio and making them exclusive.

I know PC fans don’t like this sort of thing but all of these exclusive avenues are the only way Epic will get people to use their store.

Just because it happens within the console space, doesn't make it okay everywhere else. PC gamers don't like this sort of thing, primarily because it's anti-consumer and further fragments the playerbase into pieces. Some of us like having our games in a complete library, rather than fragmented across multiple storefronts, numbering by the years.

Epic already has people on their storefront, Fornite kids and teen/young adult gamers. They can start by sorting out their store and PR, working on it from there would help a lot better than simply going around, flipping everyone off, smacking people with a towel, going "I own you, you're my bitch". It's highly arrogant of Tim to act this way in regards to not giving a fuck about what we want as a consumer, and instead saying the "devs will decide who wins", while he also buys the devs to his side.

Steam takes too large a cut from game sales. I don't like the EGS by any means, but the premise behind what they're doing is anything but anti-consumer.

It may make things slightly harder on consumers in the short run, but if it benefits devs, it benefits consumers in the long run.

I was gonna say get ready for Rocket League to be rammed with Microtransactions but it already is.

I understand why you are upset, but I dont get how this is setting a new "low" for Epic. They are doing the smart move in trying to overtake the pc space, and as the last few months has shown, its paying off for them.

In the example you gave about Valve buying Campo Santo and not making them exclusives to Steam, but your example is flawed. They didnt tie them up to a store because they didnt need to, they owned the market, for better or for worse. You need to understand that they are a company, and a company that butting heads with Valve, a ginat in the videogame market. They are not going to win the fight by being nice.It sucks that you are being get in the crossfire, but thats just how things are.

And honestly, 95% of the PC users dont care.At all.Its "mostly" the same if they buy from Valve or from Epic, because what they care about is the product, not the company. And honestly, service features, as Epic has been showing through their success, is less important than people think.I mean, its important, but its not a life or death situation, and the most important thing is, as we all knew ever since gaming was born, is that its the games that matter.

PC is finally catching up to the consoles wars, in a way.You may think thats bad, anmd I honestly dont care, but this is good for the consumers in the long run, because it stops Valve from being as lazy as they have been, and make companies be more competitive, and bring better products for us.

PC gamers don’t like it because it’s a tiny inconvenience to have a different launcher that loads up when they click on the game. It’s not as if the player base will be split up among Steam and EGS users. It’s not as if Steam users have to buy the game all over again. You might need to use a different launcher. Oh my.

I could see an uproar if they weren’t going to support the game on Steam after it launches on EGS later this year, but they’ve already said they would.

Damn tencent right

Yeah, its an incovenience at best.

In another words, a non issue.

We can argue about the ethics all day whenever we want but ultimately at the end of the day it is rightfully within EPIC by law who bears right's to the ownership of Psyonix IPs to be able to bar selling content using the said IPs to other retailers. The future of PC gaming or gaming in general is going to be more exclusivity so RIP to every major 3rd game publisher out there ...

The LAW does not aim to morally discriminate between what we believe to be good or bad but it only aims to discriminate what is right or wrong on a technical basis ...

IMO, Tim Sweeney is just as rotten to the core of an owner of EPIC as Tencent are so it's no wonder their both perfect for each other ...
