Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony: PS5 not due out before April 2020

April 5th.

It points for a holiday release as always, then.
Mid year launch would be strange, either it was March to boost FY or it was holidays.
PS5 not happening at all this year tho.
TLoU 2 confirmed to be 2020 early year big game, IMO.
GoT might be cross-gen.
PS4 still has a lot of life in it, 120M+ sales confirmed.

Death Stranding, GoT, and TLoU2 will probably all either be crossgen or quickly get PS5 remastered editions.

I'd rather a ps4 like gpu with a huge cpu upgrade. We need more expansive games with alot of on screen processing for unique immersive experiences. We haven't had many this gen, and with next gen you will see the same thing. But upgrades to the gpu will mean better graphics but tax the cpu power, so you will end up with the same games most likely.

The chips design is pretty much done and dusted at this point for the most part. Just some Q's and T's that need to be done... They do need to do additional QC testing and ramp up production and stockpile components and build out the software ecosystem and work with developers.

Sony advertising the fact it won't be out by 2020 though does give Microsoft a window to beat them to the punch, one reason why the Xbox 360 did so well is because it had such a large window of the entire market to itself, allowing it to gain a foothold.

In saying that... Microsoft and Sony derive their consoles from the same PC technological hardware base (AMD), so they are both stuck to the same technological timeline issues (I.E. Chip development) as each other... If we get an Xbox Two this year, it will be very interesting.

It's done indeed, but it's not available to mass produce until Q3 2020.

Well Microsoft will have benefit from early release no doubt,  but it will make all Xbox One X adopter disappointed, also if Microsoft  using AMD Navi 20 lite and Zen 2 as well, they will comes at the same time frame as PS5. Navi 10 itself will probably going to be release on the summer and Navi 20 next year.

PS5 will probably will have navi 20 lite along with Xbox Next , so probably we will ended up seeing the same pattern like with PS4 and Xbox One when it was released.

Mass production will happen before Q3 of 2020. They need to stockpile and shift components.
Some fabs will only do about 10,000-40,000 wafers a month... Often less on newer nodes like 7nm. - And each wafer you will get about 250~ chips per 300mm wafer.... And that is only if all the chips are usable.

So it will take time to build up millions of units for the launch window.

Well, considering that neither MS nor Sony will buy chips in small shipments at a time, but in quite big ones, that rumour about AMD ready to deliver Sony the chips in Q3 2020 isn't necessarily wrong, as it could simply mean not that production will start then, but that then they'll be able to regularly ship the quantities Sony needs.

There would probably be a big shipment in Q3 2020 no doubt.
But the manufacturing part *must* start a long time before then unless they want to run out of units.

I mean the shipping from China to some parts of the world can exceed a month just by itself... Allot goes into building these devices, it's insane once you start looking at the logistics of it all and how they pull it off.

I was hoping for an earlier launch, new hardware always gets me amped.

...to avoid getting banned for inactivity, I may have to resort to comments that are of a lower overall quality and or beneath my moral standards.

Pretty much confirms November 2020 as the launch date lol.

No need to guess, you can actually find timetables on the internet, it's not a secret. It takes roughly 7 to 8 weeks on sea.

Also we are looking at 75-80 masks for 7nm non-euv. That's over two months for a wafer. Including a final test run, wafer production would start roughly 3/4 years ahead of you seeing a console.

No, some insider said Sony 7nm chip will be available in Q3 2020 https://www.digitimes.com/news/a20190416PD205.html

Sorry bro, but it turns out that you were wrong and the "insider" was full of shit. They're coming in 2019:
