I just read a French article talking about how a lot of critics (and some spectators) are completely disconnected from what is now mainstream culture like superhero movies, don't understand the movies at all, consider themselves superior for disliking it (not "intellectual" enough), and are surprised and unhappy when those movies are successful. "Why do a lot of people go watch this movie and like it when us, intellectually superior critics, told them that it's bad?"

Very nice read, written by a journalist specialized in cultural topics (once again, French only though) :
https://www.franceculture.fr/cinema/le-succes-titanesque-davengers-laisse-les-critiques-tetanises

someone considering themselves to be intellectually superior yet works as a pissant movie critic online where they're told by their boss to review a movie they don't like the genre of?

Should maybe use some of that superior intellect to get a less shitty job eh?

Click bait gonna click bait though.

Click bait? What are you even talking about?

Okay, I'm doing an actual post now. So, hmm, let's see...

It's a really hard movie to digest for me. Infinity War was hard because of the nature of everything that happened, and in that regard Endgame is easier as it has a happy-ish ending and all, but what makes it difficult for me is what happened to the Guardians of the Galaxy. I mean... I was fine with almost all of them dying in Infinity War because it meant Rocket would at least get more screentime and cool moments in Endgame. But, nope. Besides one alright scene with Thor, he basically spends the whole movie doing nothing and is a throwaway character that's just... there. When the Guardians do come back, they are also mostly really irrelevant, which I guess is fine given the state of the movie by that point... and well, Gamora really did never come back - and while that was good for Avengers in that it made the events of Infinity War matter, it also taints the Guardians movies for erasing a character and relationship they worked so hard to build, even though I can see this being Gunn's decision. But really, my biggest concern is fucking Thor. I mean, Thor..? Really? I sure hope that was just some high level baiting and that he won't be a Guardian come Vol. 3, but it doesn't feel like it. I got no issues with him as a character, but not in Guardians... please. In the end, I just wanted Thanos' whole arc to revolve around the Guardians more, because those were the characters that had a more personal connection to him from the beginning, but that never happened.

So, yeah. GotG fanboy side of me is not happy. But when putting those thoughts aside, the movie is very, very good. I went in knowing absolutely nothing and was positively surprised with each crazy turn it took, everything was so unexpected and it was just great. All the time travel stuff and going back to earlier movies was really cool, it was great to see many characters we never thought we would again, and in some cases, didn't even use to care for. The way they subverted all your expectations and still came up with an epic finale was quite awesome, really. I just don't want fucking Thor in my fucking Guardians of the Galaxy, that's all.

Okay, I... officially take back everything I said here. Or almost everything, I guess.

Just rewatched the movie, and yeah, everything's fucking fine. Rocket's fine. The Guardians are fine. Everyone is fine. I think I maybe got a little too distracted by the subtitles in my first viewing (I was far enough from the screen for them to be really unavoidable to the eye), and having now got used to watching movies in pure english with no subtitles, I think I'm beginning to understand just how much they detract from the experience. No line ever feels well delivered when you already read it in text faster than the actors can say them. You can't really pay attention to the acting when you're constantly reading translated text, and stuff. This second viewing today, having been closer to the screen, I made a real effort to avoid subtitles as much as possible (believe me, it's really hard), and noticed how good everything was.

I say I take almost everything back, because I'm still iffy on the Gamora situation and very not amused with the Thor situation. But Endgame really was one hell of a movie, and it wasn't unfaithful to its characters at all.

The one non-Guardians thing that annoys me and will continue to annoy me really is the Pym particle stuff. It's honestly really silly to imagine that no one in the whole freaking universe can figure time travel out when some guys in a lab did it and only required some stuff that was made by Earth scientists as far back as 1970. But eh, it's a movie, I guess. We ignore that one thing and the MCU can continue to be awesome. If it doesn't, well, Endgame is.

Yeah. That kinda bothered me too but we look the other way. Tony, Hank Pym, B r uce Banner (I've typed it twice and both times that weird spacing was there), Reed Richards and Victor Von Doom are all geniuses but they're supposed to be geniuses in a certain area. Only Reed from the Fantastic Four knows everything about everything. Tony's genius is super OP.

He went from not knowing anything about time travel to not wanting to change the past. Then he went from not wanting to change the past to being there guy who figured it out IN ABOUT A DAY!

But still the the high points of the movie were so high, you have to almost actively look for things to complain about. The writing didn't seem a clever and a lot of the jokes were jokes I had seen elsewhere but that was minor.
