It's baffling that there's no sequel do Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross yet... Probably the most obvious game that should have already been made.
Wasn't it because Chrono Cross was less favorably received than Chrono Trigger?
Why haven't they made an HD remaster of Smash TV?
Chrono Cross scored in the 90s for most reviewers and sold extremely well, making it one of the PS1's Greatest Hits. The only people that have a problem with it are the vocal minority who are salty over Crono, Marle, and Lucca being killed in the timeline the game takes place in and try to classify it as a spin off, despite it being a direct and true sequel. The events of Cross were a direct result of the actions taken in Trigger, and all of existence was at stake. Sounds like more than a spin off to me. Plus the cutscenes in the PS1 version of CT indicate not only the fall of Guardia and the death of Crono, but also that Kids was indeed found and taken in by Lucca.
Then to even further squash those that tried to separate the two, the DS remake took it a step further and reinstated that Guile in Chrono Cross is actually Magus after wiping his own memory in from CT. There was a final boss added called the Dream Devourer, which resembled the Time Devourer in Chrono Cross (actually the Dream Devourer is the starting form of the Time Devourer, making them the same). After you "win" the fight, everyone is overpowered until Schala regains consciousness for a few moments and tells Magus that no matter how powerful he becomes, he will never be able to save her as he is now. She then teleports him away before her conciousness slips into a slumber, which is how she is found in Chrono Cross.
Feeling defeated, Magus wipes his own memory to become someone entirely different, under the hope that should any part of him remain, maybe then he could save his sister. He awakens in Guardia forest wondering aimlessly, with no memory of his past life. He feels like he is supposed to do "something", but has no idea what that something is. He then sets off in search of any type of enigma to be found in the world, which is exactly what Guile was doing in Chrono Cross.
It is funny because Guile was originally meant to be Magus to begin with, but it was scrapped at release. However SE retconned their retcon and made in a version of Magus in the end.
And to answer uour earlier question, yes this game was supposed to happen long ago, but sadly never saw the light of day.
