I think people are going to be surprised with this Storage. SSD's are going to blow past HDD in Capacity/Price over the next few years. They are talking about not only speed, but also storage capacity. SSD will allow them to offer massive capacity as the generation progresses. I believe they are planning for the PS5 platform to lead the PlayStation brand longer than any previous PlayStation. By the mid way point of this gen, Sony will be able to save massive amounts of money on lower storage models, and offer capacity far beyond what HDD's can offer in higher end models.

To me, everything they are showing now, is laying the footprint for a platform that can be iterated upon for many many years. The CPU, Storage, and HDMI 2.1 (8K) will allow them to offer more GPU options down the road, while also allowing Launch PS5 owners the ability to enjoy services like PS Vue, PS Video, and PS Now as they mature to 8K streaming.

I sure as hell hope not, what they're talking about is what will make next gen feel next gen. I have no doubt sony could succeed with a $449-499 console If they choose to go that route. Its not the PS3's $599 pricetag and it'll certainly be better supported at launch. Equally it won't be a case of paying a $100 premium over the competition for a weaker system (xbox One) which is riddled with bad press at launch (DRM)

Can expect the release to be late next year, (almost 2 years) by that time the Navi 10 and Navi 10 lite will drop in price which will significantly lower the overall price of the console.

Sounds cool...though I’m not sure how 8K will be that much different than 4K and how it’ll enhance gameplay...

Plus the pricing for this supposed machine...if it’s $400 or more, I’ll gladly wait until a price drop. I waited for the PS4 to drop to $250 before buying. Thus I’ll have no problem waiting for the right price with the PS5.

For everyone that thinks the price will be too much...

1. The PS3's $600 price tag is $750 in today's money. Inflation is a thing.

2. 360 launched a year earlier for $400 and $300. Wii launched alongside it for $250 with a free game packed in. There's not going to be a $300 XB2 model. Nintendo won't launch alongside them this time.

3. PS2 had been price cut to $129 when PS3 launched. This meant that early adopters weren't able to get much out of selling their PS2 once upgrading to the $600 PS3 launch model. PS4 Pro will likely still be worth $200 used when the PS5 launches. I don't see the Pro being price cut to below $300.

4. PS3 games ran worse then 360 games. I don't see XB2 running better than PS5.

5. 360 had a better library for the first two years. This time around the PS5 is likely to have the better library, since Sony has spent over a decade building up their 1st party developers.

6. PC gaming wasn't quite as popular back in 2006. Nowadays a lot of people spend $1000 on a PC. So a $600 console doesn't seem like such an extravagance in this day and age. 

7. The economy is much better than it was in 2006. It's unlikely that we will see a recession in 2022, like we did in 2008.

You are absolutely right.

This is the thing I always find funny. We see people argue all the time that we will never need this or that, and then we have people run tests on PC and say, "see, all this extra stuff does nothing, we don't need it".

It blows me away that still in 2019 people don't understand that if software is not developed to take advantage of 8 Cores, 128 GB of RAM, or a 3GB/s Storage solution, that they are not going to see gains. If the software is only optimized for 2 Cores, only expecting 8GB of RAM, and the files are not structured to take advantage of 3GB/s, then you are not going to see significant gains.

PS5 and XB4 are absolutely going to push PC forward, just like console have always down. They set a new baseline. So far, it looks like we are going to have a very nice new baseline this time around!

Great points. Sony will be in much better shape going into PS5 than they were going into PS3. Even with all of its road blocks PS3 still ended up selling 85M+. PS5 at $499.99 should have no problems being a huge success. I think that is the magic number for a base console going into next gen. If Sony and Microsoft want to try and push prices higher, they will need to do it through premium models. I do believe there is room for $1,000+ consoles, but it has to be a smooth transition to getting people comfortable of looking at consoles as a premium experience, and being more than just gaming machines. We are slowly, but surely getting there.

Sony co-developed navi with amd, and co developed ssd drive. In some way they own the technology, so i dont think they need to wait for prices to drop. In a bizzare way i can see Microsoft paying royalities in some way for Navi tech. We don't really know what the agreement is between Sony and Amd on Navi tech.
