Forums - Sales Discussion - PS4 and Switch sales comparison: some things to consider

OP is heading in the right track but hasn't come to the ultimate conclusion yet: PS4 and Switch are in different generations.

This makes them different for all sorts of reasons. For example PS4 has multiple versions while Switch only has 1. That is because Switch is a lot younger than PS4. Switch will have multiple versions eventually too. But Switch is young and still growing. PS4 is old and ready to have a successor. They are in two different generations.

"Nobody knows how many people are new owners or upgrades, thus we cant separate them."

"And that's like 13 people in the world? It's such a minuscule amount of people who would skip a $300 device for a $60 device that plays  30 year old games."

>$60 is $240+ in savings though.

You're not really grasping how these things work.

Products with massive price differences do not compete against one another. They either are aimed at different markets or complement each other.

For example, a 32" 720p TV for $150 is not in competition with the $1000 70" 4K TV.

The person getting the small $150 TV was either never going to get the $1000 TV or something like they already have a nice, big TV for the entertainment room and are getting the $150 one for their kids bedroom.

The $150 TV did not steal a sale from the $1000 TV just like the $60 retro console with 30 predownlaoded games is not stealing sales from the $300 new console with $60 new games.

Is it impossible that one could substitute the other? Say for example someone who doesn't have a television and is confronted with both possible options? Someone who has NO gaming media in their home and is confronted with a Switch and a mini?

This is a very weak point to make I don't want to be rude though. Nearly every console gets newer SKUs released that could appeal to those who already own one. The Switch will as well eventually.

But does Switch have various versions currently?

Yes, what of them?

Man I argued the same thing about 3DS.

How big was the actual userbase? Hell I ended up buying like 20 or more of them All the limited editions I could plus XL and 2DS etc..

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

Not huge issues.

The PS4 had PS3 and Vita at the same time with new games and some exclusives, while the Switch only had the 3DS and not even the Wii U.

The PS4 has had 3 competitors outside of the PS ecosystem and 2 of them strong in the XB1 and Switch. The Switch only has to deal with aging XB1 and PS4 so far.

No arguments here.  Just as I find it ridiculous when Sony fans try to downplay Switch sales, it is equally ridiculous that Nintendo fans feel the need to downplay PS4 sales.  I am someone who upgraded to the pro and gave my kids my launch model.  But I am also someone who bought two Switches, one for me and one for my kids.

In the end, sales are sales.  I see no reason to nitpick factors that have minimal influence.

I agree overall but technically Switch had to deal with prime PS4, 2017 & 2018 were its highest selling years.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

Nintendo fans downplaying ps4 sales again. I never see Playstation fans mentioning all the different models that ds and 3ds had
