I once had a problem with watching Youtube on Chrome. If I remember correctly, I had to disable acceleration.

Yh that works... but only if you have a really powerful CPU. With hardware acceleration on you will notice the Chrome Instance that is playing the video uses like 3-6% of your CPU and like 20-30% of your GPU. Even for a 4k video. Put it of and your CPU will jump to like 80%-100% usage (depending on how powerful the CPU is) and the GPU will be at zero.
Either way, this is clearly a chrome problem,as seen in the screenshots I provided playing the exact same video at the exact same rez but on two different browsers.
Edge browser is that good that Microsoft is replacing it already with a chrome-based browser: https://www.theverge.com/2018/12/4/18125238/microsoft-chrome-browser-windows-10-edge-chromium
I would be interested in the CPU and GPU usage of Chrome playing that video versus Edge. I have heard that Edge uses better GPU hardware acceleration for certain codecs than Edge, but I have not looked into it myself.
Just on a general topic though, I personally really like Edge's UI over Chrome. It follows Windows 10's design guidelines (which it should considering it is an MS browser), it has a proper full screen mode, and it is way more touch friendly (which as a Surface user is very important to me), and I like the inking features. With regards to performance, I too have experienced better performance on Edge versus Chrome for certain video streaming sites, namely with Netflix and Twitch, and I like some of the power saving features that Edge has over Chrome (on Surface using Chrome almost instantly turns the fans on; the same thing happens on a Macbook when using Chrome versus Safari); on the other hand, there are some websites that work much better with Chrome and in some cases are barely functional on Edge (Youtube Music is one such site). Microsoft's is building a new Edge based on Chrome's open source basis known as Chromium, which should improve performance (for both Chrome and Edge) on Windows. I just hope they do that while maintaining current Edge's UI and features.

tests show hey both use about the same amount of RAM. However Edge uses all round more of everything. Its usi like 40% of my CPU and 80%-100% of the GPU. Chrome is using like 54% of the CPU and like 40% of the GPU

Stop playing Youtube videos. Problem solved.
Edge indeed probably has performance advantages over some of the other browsers. I am a web developer, programmer and sys admin. So what i'm about to say is by first hand experience.
Of all the browsers Edge, and all previous IE versions are the WORST to have to account for. By far Edge !@#$% sucks with conforming to standards. Microsoft has continually half assed its implementation of features so badly that my teams have had to continually write IE/Edge specific code along side the standard code for the other browsers. The results have usually been that other browser users get a clean intended experience and IE/Edge users get a clunky so so experience. I don't know if this is enough to express how much I hate IE/Edge. I cannot wait for the next version of Microsoft browser that abandons their made up crap rendering engine for chromium.

I hate browsers sometimes lol Is it just that one video or do you have other videos that are affected? |
The large number if instances is because chrome opens a thread literally for everything. Iframe for google analytics? Thread. Extension? Thread. Tab? Thread. A page that has a bunch of adds in iframes playing videos will bog down a moderately good PC. This is why using an adblocker like ublock origin and then unblocking sites that you are comfortable with is key to a good chrome experience.
