Are they selling refurbished xbox consoles or has that stopped as well, this far into the cycle it might not be a worry for them, but what happens when the next cycle starts and customers come looking for their PS5 and XB2 consoles , do they turn around and tell them go somewhere else if that's the case I can see a lot of gamers going else where to get their new console and games and not bothering to return.

They have never sold refurbished consoles or used games.

Nobody except them knows what they will do in the future. They might not stock certain consoles if they perceive them to push too much toward digital. And yes, that would mean that they will tell customers to buy certain consoles somewhere else. I don't think they'll worry about losing customers for good, because their reputation as a games store is too good. People aren't going to stop buying games from them. A good chunk of their business comes from shipping PEGI versions (European rating board) of games to Germany, because USK versions (German rating board) aren't necessarily the same. There are lots of customers who don't turn to their store to purchase consoles to begin with.

From what you have said it sounds like they cater for a particular clientele. so their attitude might be harder to maintain elsewhere.

I think this is more so a response from Sony to retailers, because (for example) best buy has been reducing shelf space for sony product (gaming in general) quite a bit to the point theres not enough room to represent all the games in stock on the shelf, nor do we put out promotional shippers because of floorspace for higher profit products like TV's, headphones etc. in short, retailers outside of gamestop have more revenue and profits to earn on other products than gaming, so the investment is not there.

Shelf space is representative of what a company is willing to pay for it. You can’t really blame Best Buy to reduce gaming space in their stores to replace it for more space in home theatre since it generates more revenue in general. Even with smaller space, they can still outbid their competition for the size of their sections. If their sections seems smaller, it’s probably because they don’t feel the need to invest more than what they already do.

You can make the comparison with GameStop, Sony’s investment in advertising in GameStop has always been bigger than with Best Buy, and you can see the difference, their sections are generally bigger since they invest more than the competition.

In general you're correct, space does have a bidding to some degree, but we've always used our space to react to trends more so than bids, trust me. Over the past few years gaming software revenue and profit and been comping down, and the space for that has been getting smaller for other areas in stores where space is limited. Best Buy has been shifting away from gaming as a whole with the removal of Gamers Club and being far from competitive on gaming trade-ins plus the removal of used-games.

I can only speak for my job, but I imagine other stores like target and walmart aren't improving year-over-year when it comes to gaming either, Sony can see this, so they're responding the best way they can.

Seems like a good way to piss off retailers, who already hate the push for digital games as is.

I'm guessing that they don't sell many digital games with retailers anyway.  So retailers might well end up pretty neutral.

Sony should spin this as a positive one less digital product, means that retailers have the opportunity to  sell them physical new or preowned or PSN$ instead.

One of the main reasons I go for digital is so that I don't have to haul my sexy ass to a game store. Going to a store to buy a digital code kinda defeats the purpose.
