Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony will no longer allow retailers to sell digital codes for games, add-on cards and PSN$ cards will remain

Fine, let all game discs bought in future actually be the damn games their supposed to be found on discs.
This is the backside to digital, and why I prefer games physical and everything on disc.

Hopefully this pushes devs to not be gimpy with physical on disc releases in future.

How many people actually buy digital codes for full games in retail stores, though? I see why people would buy set dollar amounts, but full games? Seems awfully pointless, especially when you have to go to the online store to even buy the game, anyway. And if that game is on sale, do you get any kind of refund?

I haven’t bought a physical game now in almost a decade and I have never bought a code from a retailer... if I want a game I just buy it on my console... so much less hassle...

A simple google search would show multiple online stores of codes let alone stores. So... Like me, probably quite a lot of people.

Here's a site that complies a few of the sites and compares prices.https://www.allkeyshop.com/blog/catalogue/category-playstation-4/

This is a site that I frequently use as well as cdkeys.com

I'd have to see numbers before I believe it is actually a lot.  It just seems like self-imposed redundancy.  If you are already online, why wouldn't just buy from the store you have to go to anyway to enter the code.  I highly doubt the prices are going to be any different.  I know they definitely wouldn't be from physical retailers.

Seems like a good way to piss off retailers, who already hate the push for digital games as is.

I'm guessing that they don't sell many digital games with retailers anyway.  So retailers might well end up pretty neutral.

That's my thought, too.  We can clearly see that dollar cards are the greatest draw, going by Amazon, anyway.  And if you want to buy a new game from the store, but for some reason don't want to actually do it through the store as your first step, you can just buy a $40-$60 card.

"Retailers" is vague. Does that include Amazon for instance?

If the prices weren't different, the sites wouldn't have a business model to exist in the first place... Not only are there several sites doing this, there is enough money in it for a site to exist that simply compares prices between said sites.

I'd say that the numbers are substantial. Numbers can't be provided, just common sense.

Guuuuuuuuys, its like you have your heads buried in the sand. Why would SONY care about pissing retailers as we move towards a digital/streaming era? Gamespot is obsolete and will be no more by next gens end. Dont think that retailers will stop selling their consoles. No way. Hottest items year round. Honestly this only really hurts Gamespot.

Retailers sell consoles because they make the money on software sales.

Did you read the thread title  "

Sony will no longer allow retailers to sell  " digital codes "

No one say they will stop allowing retail store  selling physical disc. Also there are others thing they can sell merchandise, special edition, toys, peripheral etc.

Why? Sometimes I want to gift people a specific game.
