This poll was badly made. 50 mbps in the USA is stupidly good. There are a huge amount of people in the USA with with sub 5mbps internet. Probably somewhere around 20% or more.

If I wanted 95 mbps internet I'd have to sign up for Mediacom's $80 a month plan, and then after the first year the cost goes up. That $80 doesn't even include taxes or fees either, so in reality it's more like $100 a month for "up to" 100 mbps.

Depends where you are, I guess.  50mbps is now the slowest broadband plan available to me.  I'm on the second cheapest plan, at 100mbps.  If I separated from cable, and included all taxes, it would cost about $70 per month, no cap.  1000mbps comes in around $110 per month, if I want it.

Well, I've never seen it this fast before

This morning it was down to less than 1 mbps. A fresh reboot of modem and wifi extender fixed that. 11ms ping through wifi extender, pretty good.

The problem is not that my connection can't be fast, it's highly unreliable. I have to reboot my modem at least once a week to get a better connection to the hub. Drops happen, I go from 5 bars during the afternoon to 3 bars in prime time on GTS, with the odd disconnect still happening. It doesn't seem one day goes by without some kind of connection issues. I wouldn't want to risk playing a game where I could lose everything due to a few seconds of extreme macro blocking or buffering.

*EDIT: Better image, and holy crow much faster. *Chants* USA, USA, USA

Hopefully this image works (never had to post one before). So my new 250 Mbps connection is spot on when I run a speed test on my Macbook, but when I try it on my PC (using a wireless USB wifi adapter) I am getting in the range of 20 to 50 Mbps, fluctuating quite often.

I have a N300 Netgear Wifi Adapter. Any suggestions?

IDK, is this at least decent?

Tell Carlos Slim to haul his sorry ass to Spain where we are stuck with horrid ping and even worse ISPs!

Currently paying for 120Mbps down, 10Mbps up. No data cap.

Now that I am home I can test my actual speed.

Faster than 53% of the US? Well relatively speaking yours is actually pretty decent then. But wow, the US must have some pretty bad internet around, I wonder if some people are still on dial up or something

34 million Americans (roughly 1/10 of the population) don't have access to high speed internet currently (high speed is defined as 25 mbps or higher), mainly due to living in rural areas where the only options are DSL (which is typically capped at 3 mbps) or satellite internet (which isn't great either, due to latency and small data caps). The cable companies aren't willing to run cable to rural areas where the population is less than 200 people per square mile because they can't get enough money through subscriptions to cover the cost of running the cable and the Cell companies aren't willing to put 4G LTE towers out into those areas for the same reason, and since alot of US states have large rural areas (Wyoming, Montana, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Alaska, West Virginia, South Dakota, North Dakota, Kansas, etc.) there are alot of people that don't have access to fast internet currently.

Microsoft thankfully wants to change that and is investing billions of their own money into telecommunications companies to bring high speed to rural areas via white space signals:

https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/07/microsoft-will-help-isps-bring-wireless-internet-to-12-us-states/

You would think they could charge more to the urban customers who get the first crack at the upgrades, and use that to offset the extra installation cost for most if not all of the rural customers who would always get served second and have to wait. Crazy idea I know.

It's almost as if MS would actually like for people to be able to use that cloud thing they're always talking up eh.

Tesla is also working on Starlink, a low orbit satellite program.

"Starlink satellites would orbit at 130 to 1105 of the height of geostationary orbits, and thus offer more practical latencies of around 25 to 35 ms, comparable to or exceeding existing cable or fiber networks."

"In November 2018, SpaceX received US approval to deploy 7,518 broadband satellites, in addition to the 4,425 satellites that were approved earlier."

That was actually over WiFi.  I decided to plug into my router just to see how fast I could potentially get.

The company advertises 300 Mbps (upload and download).  Looks like I am getting my money's worth.
This also gives me a new appreciation for my ISP.  I should consider plugging in for my main streaming device.  I get a lot better performance.
