Forums - Sony Discussion - RUMOR: Sony in discussions to aquire Take-Two Interactive

I wish Sony would buy ATLUS or Sqaure too...

Black Women Are The Most Beautiful Women On The Planet.

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

Well seeing as my thread got closed I will post my general thoughts here.

Reasons Why this could be True....

1. FACT: The competition is about to get stiff with Google entering the ring.

2. Rumor of MS trying to buy EA.

3.Sony does have the money.

4. Take Two and Sony have always had a good working relationship.

5. AGENT, the comeback.

6. For Rockstar alone.....it would be worth every penny.

These are pretty weak reasons tbqh

1. More avenues for T2 to make money too

2. So it's a reaction to an unsupported rumour?

3. Sony also needs the money for it's own operations. Buying T2 doesn't even take into account operation costs and salaries etc

4. Have T2 and MS not had a good working relationship?

5. Weakest of reasons for sure

6. It would, but back to 3

It could happen though but I doubt it

First I will state that the actual rumor is that Sony WANTS to buy Take Two, not that they are as of yet. It is supposedly what caused spike in TT stock. It is very believable because honestly who wouldn't want them?

What I am pointing out are reasoning(from mostly Sony POV to take the risk) and subtle shifts and whispers that could point to it all being true.  If being console agnostic is the future as many industry people are predicting than being a Mega-Publisher is the future as well.  It just makes sense for the industry to start forming closer alliances and mergers. Look at Epic. Modest game developer who has made itself so valuable to the game space via Unreal Engine and games like Fortnite.....has now started vying to take a chunk out the STEAM pie. MS acquisitions aplenty the last 2 years or so. MS and Nintendo partnership forming to some degree. Crossplay across competitors. All physical video game distributors(Amazon, Gamestop, Best Buy) reeled back their broad discounts to prepare for inevitable digital/stream future of Next Gen. Ground work has been being set for some big evolution come Next Gen. Sony removed themself from the E3 docket at a crucial time for a reason, they must being laying out some master plan.

Industry Shake ups are happening everywhere of late and likely more to come. This Rumor just continues to fit that Narrative. Acquiring a prestigious studio like TT is insanely valuable. Take Two might be into it as well with the idea that their direct competitors are making similar alliances and mergers. EA may very well be in talks for big buy out, which would not be at all shocking with their list of failure of late(ME:A, Anthem,BF, Need for Speed series death,Evergreen series like Madden declining, Studio closures, Star Wars contract end, etc). They are just the right amount of profitable yet currently vulnerable that makes them poised for a buyout.

I just think it is short sighted for anyone to shut down the conversation for this outright. Rumors are rarely substantiated until they are. I would say most in the gaming industry turn out to be true to some extent, at least for a time. Like all the rumors on next gen specs, or MS moving from pure consoles, or Disney Fox buyout, etc. Everyone is so dismissive until they turn out to be true. There is never any hard evidence of these sorts of discussions until it is finalized, but the conversations started from something....usually.

Yeah, being Take-Two, you still make a massive profit from both Microsoft and PC, and if Google were to enter the fray via streaming or whatever, that is another major market they'd miss out on. Not a chance in hell this is happening.

Would be a dream come true for list wars though.

This might tempt MIcrosoft to buy EA with fifa, madden nhl, Nba live star wars , mass effect anthem , sims dragon age ,etc and another AAA like Ubisoft, so Microsoft can double what Sony just did . I hope sony does buy take two So microsoft goes even bigger

Considering the Xbox's divisions marketshare and profit numbers in the console space, I don't know if the big heads at Microsoft would sanction that kind of buy.

There's also the fact that EA pales in comparison to T2 and Rockstar.  If MS did buy EA, I could see Sony merging San Diego Studio with the 2K team, and revamping the series to include sports they are missing.  They would be the only MLB and WWE game in town.  NBA 2K is the largest NBA title.  EA's NFL deal is over in 2020, so we could see competition in that space, again.  They could get back to developing NHL games.

The other games listed have just been on the decline recently, so that's a big meh.  At least for me.

I doubt it, but if they do, I think they stay mulitplat.

Which would make the deal largely pointless. So, no, I wouldn't expect that at all.

Yea.  The most I could see is them releasing on Steam 6-12 months later.

That's one of my wish, but reality is a hurt so i guess this will just end up as rumor . But i just hope Sony just buy FromSoftware, Platinum Games, Kojima Production, Blue Point, and Insomniac, i will be a happy person.

I think the two I would want the most is From Software and Blue Point.  From Software made some of my favorite games back on the PS1, namely the King's Field series and Echo Night.  I hope they revive those two franchises at some time, even if they would just be remakes.  And Blue Point would be awesome because you can have a studio solely focused on making great remakes (they make some of the best), while the original studios who made those games can focus on new or current IPs.

Well if all of Sony was going to have to fit the bill, not just the Playstation division(albeit the PS side is about the only portion raking in the doe these days) I imagine it would be akin to how Sony operated SOE studios. SOE was treated as something separate from playstation, exclusively working on PC for years. Or the idea that Sony Music and Movies sometimes has exclusive partnerships with MS strangely enough. A Take Two owned by Sony could still very well make games for other consoles, just that they would be given explicit benefit to be played on Playstation.

From Sony's persepctive it would obviously make sense, not so much from Take-Two's.

This isn't so much about how much Take Two is currently making, but as a publicly traded company, how much investors value it. Just a few months ago, shares were $138. Just a few days ago they were $87, even with a good Q4 result. If the board thinks they can make a lot of money with Sony purchasing the company for $130 a share, they may go for it.

It's also important to note that not too long ago, 2015 and 2016, T2 actually posted net losses for the year. It may also be about making sure the company is more stable in stormy conditions under the market leader's large umbrella. If it happens to be true, of course.

Thanks for the info. Didn't know about the posted losses.

I think what many seeing this rumor are forgetting is the idea of TT's stock doubling from it. The increase happened before the rumors hit the net, Shareholders are privy to info we usually don't know which makes me think they have/had reason to believe it to be true. I really don't think these people shift their money just on any rumor, just the ones that have the assumption of clout. The counteraction articles are strange because they only seem to address that "Oh Sony never said TT, we just know they are looking to buy someone".....I don't hear any rumors of any other Studios Shares moving like that....I'm just saying.

I highly doubt it would happen but I would love if it did especially with MS becoming very aggressive with acquisitions. I could see Sony paying 14BN but I can't see Take Two selling for that. Surely someone like MS, Tencent, Google or Apple would pay 50BN for them.

Do you guys think that games like GTA would lose a lot of sales if they were exclusive to PlayStation? I have my doubts...
Sincerely, considering the dominant position of the playstation and the gigantic popularity of GTA, I sincerely think that the number of copies of the game would not suffer much impact. I mean, something like 66% already
play GTA on ps4 and most of the remaining 33% would simply buy a playstation to play ...
I believe that GTA playstation exclusive would have sales level lower but still close to "GTA" multiplat, at least 85%, and playstation/PC GTA can sell over 90% of "normal sales".
