Forums - Gaming Discussion - Update: Jade Raymond joins Google as Vice President | Rumor: Google's gaming console details leaked, possible controller design revealed via patent

The console market is a hard and tricky one. Money and brand name not always mean much and publishers are usually reluctant to support new platforms until the install base is large enough... and sometimes not even after that.

Whatever Google plans to do, they should take this as a marathon, and don't expect to win from the start just because they're Google.

First year or 2 they should really be open to paying full port cost of the game and some profit for the devs. As if they were the publisher. Then whatever sells is their. Until devs and pubs are confident enough they can release by themselves on a steady rhythm.

This makes no sense to me..... I can uderstand having studios develop exclusive games for you t put on a service..... but I can not understand the logic in trying to double down into a console industry that has on average not sold more than 300M conoles in any given generation over the last 30 years.

If they have money like that to burn, then If i were them I would become a publisher instead.

The goal of the console now is to bring people into their ecosystem for when streaming takes over and traditional consoles die in a couple of generations. This is part of a larger strategy to be the eventual market leader of game streaming services.

And launching the console before buying some devs and without no experience will do wonders for them =p

That controller looks like it can't be used by normal hands, let's hope it's just a mock-up and not someones real idea of an actual device. I'm curious to see that Google bring to the table, but my expectations are quite low, I think I'll need some proper convincing to buy yet another console, seeing how little use my three current ones are getting lately.

Nobody ever said they're not buying devs. It was reported last year that they were eyeing several studios to buy and turn into a 1st party for the console and the streaming service. Just because we haven't heard about Google buying them as of yet, doesn't mean that it hasn't happened, the discussions could have taken place behind closed doors between trusted executives with NDA's signed to prevent leaks before the grand reveal event.  It was reported that just 5 people outside of Google had been briefed on the console as of July last year. They clearly wanted to keep a lid on this project until the official reveal.

As for experience, the Google Console project is reportedly headed up by Phil Harrison, who was a former exec for both Playstation and Xbox.

Considering the good/great 3rd party devs that would accept being bought by Google, considering it takes several years to develop a new game (so look at how long each of them haven't revealed a game in a platform on the last 2 or 3 years), how many devs would they have to show for? I guess not many if any. Much more likely they'll moneyhat ports.

X1 controller strains my left thumb after a while, thought I would mention it as this has turned into controller wars.

Agree.

The question, if those rumors are true, is that while those ports could be "easy" and kind of cheap nowadays with a console more powerful than any of the others, that will change next year when the PS5 and XboxWhatever come with better specs. Will Google's console have sold enough consoles by then to make it a worth investment for publishers? We'll see.

It's more logical to have the D-Pad parallel with the face buttons, and the analogs parallel with each other. One of the reasons the X-Box is garbage for fighting games.
