Forums - Gaming Discussion - PQube: Switch will replace the Vita for Niche Japanese Games; PC Is Too Overcrowded

Hopefully all those Vita games become switch/ps4 titles and not just switch exclusive.

Alot of small-medium Japanese games over the last decade have transitioned from PSP+PS3 to PSP+PS3+PSV to PS3+PSV to PS3+PSV+PS4 to PSV+PS4 to PSV+PS4+NSW and now PS4+NSW and soon to be PS4+NSW+PS5.

It's just a natural progression now that NSW fills that role of powerful handheld that PSP/PSV used to fill.

Makes sense, but dual releases will probably still prevail. Either way, I'm still waiting for a stream of JRPGs to the Switch, I expected it to become the biggest JRPG in town from day one, and it's still not getting that many.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

100% agree. PC market has the most competition. I remember hearing awhile back that indie devs, though still releasing on pc and ps4, are finding that Switch and even Xbox sometimes result in better sales due to less competition.

I very much doubt that good indie games are selling better on Xbox One or even PS4 than PC. I think the problem is that PC as a platform is something where when a game gets big, whether it's indie or not, it snowballs and becomes really big. But there's a lot of competition. So as ironic as it is to say, there's kind of a "hierarchy" in the indie scene where a lot of indie games get really big on PC, but the less recognized ones tend to sell better on something like Switch. That's why a lot of AA (something like Subnautica which is basically an indie) or indie titles become huge on Steam. And if you look at something like Hollow Knight, the support between Switch and PC was so good that development of the sequel is prioritized entirely on those two platforms. IIRC the last time they gave a split, PC was at 1 million and Switch was at 250k in 2 weeks. So Switch is selling way faster, but PC still has a lot of sales.

Yeah good post. If the game is developed with the Switch as the base on UE4 then it should be simple to make a ps4/ps5 port. I hope SW/PS4/PS5 is the future

Was anybody thinking otherwise?

News to me about the PC thing, Japanese publishers actually seem to be relying on the platform more and more, if anything. Then again I guess what I mostly know about are AAA and AA titles, but even recently there was a really niche Asian game that sold very well on Steam (honestly can't remember what it was, my bad). I think they sell pretty well if anything.

Switch is definitely a much safer bet though. Less competition overall and a lot of the Switch audience is probably inherited from the Vita.

I'd imagine they are talking about PC in Japan, but if they are talking about both Japan and the rest of the world, then I'd call them lazy and obviously seeking far less strife/competition (which is basically them wanting to be lazy).

That being said, I would like for them to continue publishing more games to the West on PC. if they don't, well I can always write them off the support list and simply support another publisher that will show care and won't be a lazy publisher who only cares about themselves.

The entire handheld market is going to be on the Switch this time including devs that made games for the Vita. Switch is going to have an extremely large game library when you consider how many different types of devs it's drawing on.

Exactly. Not only that but mostly the entire japanese market that has no real power outside of japan will also end up on the Switch since the PS4 is dying there and the games are bombing on it.

I've always thought that Switch acts as a successor to Wii U, 3DS, and the Vita, as three lines combined into one.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

The Switch is everything the Vita could've been. Dammit Sony.

Yes, that's how it was always supposed to become.

But with Sony's new censorship, I wouldn't be surprised to see PS4/PS5 being entirely skipped by some niche games. The process is apparently very heavy (presentation to do in English), and long, without even talking about the necessary changes after that (so, even longer). Part of the smaller studios won't be able or willing to handle that. Especially now that the PS4 is dying compared to the Switch in Japan.
