Obviously my example is assuming no sarcasm.

Yes, it says a lot about how the writer is tired of generic characters, but in this case he realised the character is a lot deeper than the generic foundation would suggest.
White is not a bad thing and he never said it was a bad thing it was used for description. It's like saying I have a big red ugly car. Does it mean I hate red? Does it mean red is bad and I'm being anti-red? Do I judge all red cars to be ugly? No it's a description for an ugly ass car that's red.

Racism exists but pointing racism at anything that has the word 'white' or 'black' in it without thinking about context and reading what he's actually saying or using any sort of logic at all is a bad idea.

I think what you're missing or excusing is "white" was part of his criticism.

For example, if I call a woman a "fat ugly cunt," I am mocking her weight, appearance and perhaps behavior. All the words were part of my criticism.

It was because that's part of the trope attached to that type of character.

It's not criticising the actual skin colour itself how is that so hard to see? If I see an angry black woman character and think oh what an overused trope. I'm criticising the character, I'm not criticising the skin colour that's a ridiculous leap of logic. You gotta do some serious mental gymnastics to hold your viewpoint.

But a game is not released on a void. Criticizing a game for lack of originality is completely valid.

Even when the game is original and the fact a person is a gruff white male is just one very small part of his traits? The game isn't unoriginal, the char isn't just gruff (since white male is basically irrelevant).

That is basically the moronic way of reviewing a game for what you wanted it to be instead of what it is.

"Ow great, another FPS, 3/10".

Your comment is 100% correct. He's not a bad character because of the unoriginal design. The writer goes on to say he's a very good character.

I can see a game come out and think 'oh great another battle royale game' that's perfectly valid. But that doesn't mean I'm allowed to leave it there if I go into it and examine it and see it does some things different and very great then my opinion is changed. Which is exactly what happened to the writer of the article.

Agreed. Thanks for representing my viewpoint better than I could hahahahaa

“While I’ll admit that I initially rolled my eyes at yet another Gruff White Male Protagonist."

I noticed this quote while reading the preview of Days Gone. As a white male myself I'm struggling to see what the issue with my body type being represented as the lead of this game. Especially when stats would tell you that most American biker gang leaders are white males. Are developers no longer free to make the choices they want?

It sounds like they are bored with an unoriginal premise. It's silly to take their comment as a personal offense to you.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I'm not offended or outraged. I just think it's a silly view point to have. I respect people in here who have the opposite viewpoint although I disagree. I'm not here to change people's minds, just here to give my 2 cents.

You think it's silly to not be thrilled about an uninspired concept?

And you think this is a political issue?

Replace the word white with any other race and male with female and this bigot gets fired and never works in the industry again. It's a sickening double standard.

And since when did the game and the char got reduced to grumpy white male?

No, no, absolutely not. I've heard countless times people complaining about TV shows and movies overusing the trope of sassy black women, for example. And no one ever says that's racist because it obviously isn't.

Nope. I think it's silly for his colour to be part of it. I think it's fine if he said yet another biker gang character but a biker gang character can be any colour. I don't think it should be any more interesting just because the biker gang leader wasn't white.

I also don't think this is a political issue. As I said earlier CGI moved this into the politics discussion.

Not saying you're wrong but would there actually be a big racial outcry in the scenario you painted?
