Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Startropics is coming to the Switch but not in the form many were hoping!

I played Startropics in the early 1990s on the NES and it was a good game back then. But it can't keep up with Zelda or Mario quality-wise. I guess with save states included I'm gonna give this a go but I doubt I'll finish it. The game has become overrated over the past few years for some reason. Still, childhood memories!

Maybe you're the one who never got the chance to play Ice Climber. Because anyone who has played it can see it has tons of potential. Put different types of mountains, power ups, more enemies, different weather, maybe a story mode and 4 player multiplayer and you would have a great little game.

Oh god. Ice Climbers is just bad, even fundamental aspects like the controls are horrible :p

While I don't agree with Rol on StarTropics since I loved the game (maybe there's a bit of nostalgia clouding my judgement) I've gotta say that Ice Climbers on NES is a terrible game. It controls like shit and is very repetitive. I do like the characters in Smash though.

Yeah, I agree with this.  I haven't played StarTropics since the NES days, but I remember liking it.  I never liked Ice Climber.  The controls really, really suck.  The first Super Mario Bros came out about the same time and still controls better than most games today.  Ice Climber is just a bad game.

NES games = I am somewhat excited, play them for a few minutes until I realize how bad the controls are, then quit.
SNES games when they come out on switch = Pure and simple addiction. The perfection of 2-D gaming. Why is this not out yet?

I've always had fond memories of Star Tropics. It was always a really good middle of the road game from Nintendo (actually, if I remember correctly, it was the only game developed by Nintendo of America). I would love to see a 3D reboot!

What bugs me is that, for three months now, Nintendo has reduced their dripfeed from three games a month to two! They promised three games a month, and that only lasted a couple of months! I can't understand why they would still offer three games a month to Japan while only offering NA two.

I first played StarTropics just a few years ago...
It's not the greatest game ever, but I had a lot of fun with it...
I think it's gained a cult status assisted by rumors every E3 season of its revival (it just isn't E3 season without a StarTropics rumor)...

Have a nice day...

I feel like Ice Climbers could be a decent rebooted IP, but only if it were on the scale of say...Box Boy. Like on its face, it's just not that enthralling a concept. Modernized controls with new gameplay elements could make it a neat co-op puzzle platformer, if they wanted to make it that. But that's about all it could ever be. Seriously, what the hell are you supposed to do for a story mode with Ice Climbers? Mainline 2D Mario games have more story depth than Ice Climbers ever could without fundamentally altering their identity. Ever since Snipperclips though, I've started to really like co-op puzzlers with platforming elements, so I could imagine that would work well for Ice Climbers, Nana and Popo working together to climb mountains could be a fun game for me and my girlfriend. Hop to it Nintendo.

Star Tropics I'm looking forward to finally getting to play. Apparently, according to this thread anyway, it's been massively overhyped, but whatever, if it's free with my online subscription I'm going to play it. I'll form an opinion then.

Startropics is, i believe the only Nintendo franchise with no representation whatsoever in Smash ultimate.

The fighter pass is our only hope for Mikey.

I actually think he stands a chance of being 1 of them!

In my opinion the N64 was not just the best console of the 5th gen but, to this day the best console ever created!

I wouldn't get my hopes up, but it would be cool if they did.  It would be a sign they haven't completely forgotten the game.

Am guessing they want the dlc characters to come from left field. This is the only 1st party character i can think of that would do just that.
