Forums - Gaming Discussion - I'm 3 Collosi in and hating Shadow of the Colossus - should I persist?

I've owned my PS4 Pro (my 1st ever non-Nintendo console) for about 3 weeks and after finishing Spiderman (which I really enjoyed) I was ready for my next foray into these new exotic Sony waters.

Even though I spent my youth as a Nintendo devotee I was aware of Shadow of the Collusus' 'masterpiece' status, and always liked the look of it - the glowing reviews of the recent remaster seemed to cement this consensus.

So it seemed like a no-brainer!

Umm...

So far, it's pretty bad...

It seems to consist of riding through an empty, event-less, albeit pretty world, fighting a colossus... rinse and repeat... and that's it...

I'm not against simplicity, but if you're delivering such a stripped back experience then it better be tight, feel good and control well... It doesn't do any of those things...

Maybe it's because I've just come off of Spiderman which controls amazingly, feels really fluid and does it all in environments way more complex than SOTC.

I get that comparing a 2018 AAA Sony title to a remaster of a 2005 PS2 game may be unfair but the chasm really is 'colossal'...

If they spent serious dollar upgrading the visuals, couldn't they have kept a little bit aside to address the control problems?

I feel like half the time is spent holding R2, just staring at my stamina bar as it decreases, whilst getting repeatedly shaken back and forth by the big-bad. The camera at times is terrible, and the whole thing just feels like an exercise in frustration... Not to say that it's difficult mind you (so far anyway) - I've felled the first 3 colossi without losing a life...

I mean, I could list half a dozen N64 games that control way better than this, so I don't think the PS2 argument even holds water...

I honestly don't see how this remaster can have a metacritic score of 91 if the rest of the game is more of the same...? Is it only being reviewed by people who already adore the original...? If this was a new game being released today I'd say something along the lines of a 6 would be very generous! (all for the art-style - which is undeniably lovely)

As the title suggests, I'm only 3 colossi in, so maybe I'm being really premature and it gets way better & I should stick it out a bit longer?

If it's more of the same I'd like to know as I won't be wasting any more time!

Shadow of the Collossus is one of my favourite games of all time. Part of why I like it is that the world is completely empty.. it really sets the mood.

Though it's not for everyone, and I acknowledge the problems people have with the game. If you don't like it right now, I doubt you will like it later down the line, sadly.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

Oh well, that's disappointing...

I don't have a problem with the world being empty per se, there just doesn't seem to be anything to do...

There are large sections of Metroid Prime that are desolate, but it oozes atmosphere and there is meaningful exploration and puzzle solving so that empty doesn't equate to having nothing to do.

Are there any collectables or side quests or anything in SOTC (maybe I've missed some stuff..?)

If you don't like a game, stop playing it, is that simple.

Sometimes we like things most people dislike, and sometimes we dislike what most people like, and that's OK.

SPOILER ALERT:

That's the whole game.

END SPOILERS.

Honestly, i really enjoyed it even back in the PS2 days with it's terrible frame rate but yeah this game is somewhat overrated because there is really not much else to do other than killing shiny lizards in the overworld for extra grip. The prestige this game got came mostly for being artistic and unique.

I'd say stop playing if you're not feeling the game.

That's true, but some games take a while to get going - until they 'click'...

Even if a game isn't for me I can normally at least understand where other's opinions are coming from. (XCOM or Splatoon for example - I dropped off pretty quick but recognised they why they appeal)

But if the rest of the game is more of the same I'm completely shocked it has a 91 on MC...

It's not my intention to agitate those that like it - but after playing games for 3 decades I thought I at least knew what passed for solid controls / game structure / mechanics - apparently not though... I can't help but feel reviewers must have been influenced by the nostalgia they had for the original - no way it'd score anywhere near a 91 as a new game today...

Now I guess I know how those Crackdown 3 fans feel towards that 60 MC score...

At least it only cost me £20!

You should hate yourself instead.
Jokes aside, the game is that, seak and beat colossi.
There is a story going on, it develops mostly during the end of game, tho.
The colossi gets a lot "harder", tho, not in the sense of pure difficulty but on working out how to beat them.
The more you realize the colossi are the actual levels and the map is there just to make you wonder what you have been doing (and seek upgrades and collectibles, as yes, there is stuff to look on while exploring), the more you'll realize the actual design of everything being as it is.
Shadow of the Colossus is a masterpiece, one of the most powerful videogames ever, you should stick with it.

Ok, I'll give it another go tomorrow - I really do want to like it... So far it's just really fell under my understandably high expectations...

What's the cut-off though? How many more Colossi should I give it before I eject forever if I'm still not enjoying it?

Hmm, conflicting advice... I think I'll sleep on it :)

Yeah, if you really want to give the game a chance stick till the fifth Colossus, it's one the best parts of the game for me and it must look visually stunning in the remastered version.

If you hate a game, just stop, but try to comeback to it in the future, I really hated the first Dark Souls, I couldn't understand why people loved the game, in a couple of months, I tried, then stopped again, then finally, the satisfaction in progressing the game slowly made the game really enticing until I finally loved the game(then bought all the souls games), it might not be for you in the beginning, but maybe in the future, it'll be your favorite. Play a different game for now, you'll comeback to it, or not.
