Forums - General Discussion - People Are Ruining YouTube

People are not just ruining youtube.... people are ruining social media in general.

The worst part for the creators is YouTube is demonetizing the vids just because of the comments. How is that the creator's fault?

Apparently YT didn't get the memo that walls are immoral. Just because a small portion of people are doing something unreasonable doesn't mean you should penalize everyone.

Isn't that the basis of every single law?

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Who comments on YouTube videos anyways?

Pedophiles!

But seriously, the internet is a community man. Its where all the worst people in the world can get together and masturbate.

Comments on YouTube and news websites should be banned and forgotten.

It might seem ironic to say such a thing in an online forum, but user-generated content in the internet is very often an abysmal failure.

If some channels are having a significant problem with pedo viewers or inappropriate comments, then it seems like the easiest solution is allowing the creator to limit who can post or comments have to be approved. I'm not sure if that feature exist on YouTube but its not a new idea.

This isn't a problem for all videos on YouTube.

True enough. There are plenty of videos where the viewers behave well, but sadly those seem to be a minority. The demographics of the internet as a whole might be different, more older and female nowadays, but most of people who comment are still young males spreading memes, edginess and fake news. One merely needs to see which are the most popular YouTube channels to have an idea of the kind of people who are more likely to engage in user-generated content.

Most people posting comments are not trolls, you're just hyper focused on a vocal minority. If that was the case everybody on YouTube would just disable comments.

I do notice news websites and videos have exceptionally "toxic" posters. But stuff like that tends to bring the worst out of people in general. Our media actually picks sides on how it wants to tell the news so its become a team sport.

Two suggested alternate titles for this thread:

1. Pedophiles are ruining Youtube.
2. Youtube (management) is ruining Youtube.

A simple solution would be to remove the users leaving these comments but I guess that just makes too much damn sense!

As for comments on Youtube in general, the quality of the commenters depends on the video content. Go from the comment section of a rap music video, to a generic #1 trending video, to a gaming walkthrough, to a political video, to a "how to" tech related video, to a comedy gaming channel and you'll the difference for yourself. But ya know, let's generalize literally millions of people across the globe and call for censorship ignoring the irony of us voicing our dissent via comments ourselves!

Ok, mini-rant over.

EDIT: Puggsly's most recent comment wasn't there when I first started this post and I'd argue his comment is a much better and reasonably articulated (and less salty) version of mine so well done Mr. Puggs!

But for those people it is also simple to just make another account and just make the same kind of comments.

Also youtube is so big that it needs to be moderated by bots and those are currently imperfect, manual moderation does exist but it oversees too much and would be too costly to build out to a point it is efficient.

They need to tie the kid accounts to parent accounts so that the parents can monitor comments themselves. That way they can have grown up talks about internet trolls and evil people or they can choose to have comments disabled themselves or report malicious activity. These kids need the positive comments they receive too. They are often needing an identity outside their regular life and YouTube is a great platform for that development. Disabling comments isn't the best solution. They could make timecodes prohibited on those accounts as well.
