Forums - Gaming Discussion - Sony at E3 2006 by Digital Foundry

Let's revisit Sony's darkest hour and some of the decisions that cost them billions and almost drove them out of the console game forever (how some of you would have loved that!). Sony I agree with most of the analysis and as a lifelong PS fan these guys cost me years of hurt and anxiety waiting for the good games to properly roll out. I disagree about MGS4 however. I don't remember anyone not being impressed with the demo showed here. In fact this game was why I bought magazines and got hyped for the ps3 back in 2005. I adored mgs1/2/3 and could not wait for 4. Bought gaming magazines monthly hoping to see more. A valuable exclusive that was essential to keep off the xbox.

Sony majorly fucked up and they will hopefully never return to such lows. Long live Krazy Ken.

You know, the funny thing is, they actually had a lot of good or decent looking titles shown at this E3. It just had a terrible beginning and end, with a lot of gimmicks that seem kind of shortsighted. But stuff like Folklore, Heavenly Sword, Resistance, Warhawk, Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy 13 (can't deny that probably looked cool back in the day) and even the rough Uncharted showing were cool. It's too bad a lot of those games didn't do well and had their IP dumped.

It definitely feels like a relic of a time where E3 presentations were as much for the press as they were for the audience. Cause a lot of these gimmicks are just boring to watch, especially now knowing their fate.

Also, who's bright idea was it to feature Gran Turismo, F1, and Ridge Racer all so prominently in ONE conference? They even topped it off with a Need For Speed sneak peek! Come on guys!

Is this the one with the giant crabs and/or glowing weak spots? I was still so Xbox in 2006. 2006 was also another fine vintage for Pepsi Cola, and maybe the height of the Celebrity Upskirt movement. Which was more fun than Me Too.

-wow. Was I wrong about the upskirts. There are so many celebrity upskirts now. More than ever I think. Maybe less exposed p**** though. Guess it's just not that big of a deal anymore.

Watching now. Interestingly, it seems Sony is already using that emulation patent they filed, cause that's how they say the port of Loco Roco for PS4 uses. It's the original PSP game, only emulated at a higher resolution and with higher quality assets injected in. Can't wait to see if PS5 gets this, too.

Yep that's the one. I was getting collectables on assassin's creed so I listed to this entire thing. Cracked me up multiple times. Sony were such over confident idiots lol.

@angry it's funny I was so caught up with hype for mgs4, call of Duty 3, resistance and motorstorm that I didn't even realise Uncharted existed until I see an ad for it in a game magazine the month before it launch.

Ps4 had come out in march 2007 in Europe and while motorstorm, cod3 and resistance were good I was itching for more. Holiday 2007 had cod4, ratchet and clank and Uncharted so that saved the launch year for me. Then summer 2008 had mgs4 so I was a happy camper.

Actually it's a reupload from last year.

I never saw E3 2006, I just did research online about its specs, and it was bluray and MGS4 that won me over. Still have my copy to this day.

I didn't even know Uncharted and that Naughty Dog was a renowed company when my wife brought my PS4 in 2009 from Canada and had bought the 160GB with Uncharted 1 in it. I played just because it was one of the 10 games she brought back and shared the time and attention with GT5 Prologue.

I would never had imagined how much I would love the franchise and that I would have 8 platinums on it. With basically 3 playthroughs for each plat, so 24 times Uncharted myself.

Phil Harrison has had such a shit show of a career. He was heavily involved with playstation for their most disastrous launch ever and then moved to xbox for their worst ever. Who's he with now?

Still has a pretty bank balance though.
